  • Djokovic and Kohlschreiber to open play on Stadium 1 Monday

    3/15/10 8:51 AM | James Munoz
Djokovic and Kohlschreiber to open play on Stadium 1 Monday The two meet for the third time in the round of 32, having split the two previous contests. Both are looking to take advantage of their relatively open draw and advance to the next round.

With the rust removed from the opening round matches for the competitors, Monday promises to yield some high quality tennis. World’s #2 Novak Djokovic takes on #31 Philipp Kohlscreiber in third round action at the BNP Paribas Open in the third meeting between the competitors. The series is currently tied at one match a piece, but Djokovic did get the only hard court win at Indian Wells in 2008.

Djokovic is coming off an ugly win over American Mardy Fish on Saturday night, but as the old adage goes, a win is still a win. Djokovic will look to maintain the form he displayed in the final set against Fish, where he served and defended extremely well. Lacking the success in some aspects of his game, Djokovic used variety and outwitted his opponent. Today will be a bit tougher contest though if he fails to bring his best game. When the Serbian is on, he is fighting for every point and dominating play from the ground, now he must look to do this against a confident opponent.

The German men have fared quite well at Indian Wells this year, but this is the stiffest test for Kohlschreiber or any German so far. Kohlschreiber was particularly sharp in his opening round win over compatriot Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-2 and will aim for another scalp of Djokovic.

Kohlschreiber will look to play a lot of balls and fight for any opportunities, just as he did in his last encounter with Djokovic at the 2009 French Open winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The German pulled through in their last match by frustrating his opponent and being the steadier player. His biggest concerns will be about executing on the court tomorrow.

    Prediction:
The surface suits both players about equally, but Novak does have a win over Kohlschreiber at this event just two years ago. Djokovic in two tight sets.

ollyk, i seem to have lost your post somewhere? anyway, when do you next see novak play and have you heard from Sar?

maxi , 3/15/10 9:31 AM

which post, maxi? Here? I just posted once this morning, on thread about Fed... :)
Nole is playing at 8pm CET this evening..thank God, I'm gonna sleep tonight! But it is going to be tougher for him, cause its noon there and we all know how "well" he handles heat&sun. :( I just hope for the best! Ajde, Noleeee! Make that 1st serve work!
About sar...I read that yesterday was her last day at IW..she will watch matches on TV from now on. I think we'll have full report when she gets home. Can't wait!

OllyK , 3/15/10 10:44 AM

OllyK, I actually fear for Nole today!!!! We all know his serve is out of order for a long time now! In addition, the conditions in IW during the day are brutal: windy, hot and unpredictable! Also, Kohli is not Fish when it comes to his ground game, Nole's only weapon at the moment! I cannot help but remember RG when Nole lost from him. His attacking, aggressive groundies can give Nole all sorts of trouble (if he is on?)! On the other hand, I just hope Nole finds his long-lost serve and brings it out!!!! Of course I hope for a win, but I know it will be difficult. Fortunatly, unfortunately I will not be able to watch (sometimes watching him nowadays is just plane and simple painful....), so I will monitor the scoreboard from work, hoping he will maintain control and pull another rabit out of his hat!!!!!! Hajde Nole!!!!!!

arailic , 3/15/10 3:05 PM

Me too, arailic, me too.. :( Nole's serve is enigma (well, at least for me, since I've never played tennis). Terrible in Dubai, then not bad in Belgrade and then, on last Saturday, horror from Dubai reappeared... He will need that serve desperately today. I've just checked weather conditions. Sunny, temperature at noon around 25C, wind speed 10kmh...Not horrible but not very good either. If he manages to win today, I think that next match will be much easier...
(Un)fortunately, I'll be glued to my TV tonight. Watching him play lately is not easy (healthy) thing to do, you are right. But for me, it is easier to watch than to stare into scoreboard...so, cup of chamomile tea as a relaxant and I'll try to enjoy and not count double faults! :) Ajmo, Nole, be gentle to us tonight! :)

OllyK , 3/15/10 4:25 PM

"be gentle to us tonight!" Haha!

I just realized that Nole has not been playing his best since early 2009, he is still ranked #2 in the world! Okay lets say a healthy Rafa would have given him a fight for the spot, but it could be a lot worse than being consistently ranked between 2 and 4 during a bad tennis year IMO

stu , 3/15/10 6:25 PM

Ollyk, i think you posted on another thread - here - but i just wanted to wish you luck for novak. i read somewhere (in interview) that he feels much better in playing in heat/sun and can cope with it better - medication for asthma. i read your comments about his coach and i know you dont like todd martin. i think that if he doesnt help novak's game, then wont novak's serbian coach, ollyk, do something about it? doesnt he have any say in the decisions at all?

maxi , 3/15/10 6:26 PM

Thx, maxi! I read Nole's post match interview and he said it was cold (told ya, stu :P) on Saturday and that allergies are bothering him right now ?! As far as I know, that's new...
Maxi, Vajda is not Serbian coach, he is from Slovakia. And they don't coach Nole at the same time. Todd is with Nole in America (and was in Australia) and Vajda is coach for Europe and Asia. And I think that Nole is the only one who makes decisions....

OllyK , 3/15/10 7:24 PM

no doubt djo is much better in ALL ASPECTS but he looks out of sorts since his forst dubai match (even tho he won the title)....kohli in 3 in my prediction but i may well be wrong if djo plays somehwhere near his best level

vamosrafa , 3/15/10 7:31 PM

oh please, do we ever hear federer complaining about it being too hot or too cold or too early or too late? i think Serbia needs to stop pampering their star, coz nature doesn't!

stu , 3/15/10 7:48 PM

stuuuu, it is just Noooole! :D I've already got used to "hear" things like this from him. :) But he said that's not an excuse (cold). He wasn't playing well and that's all. :) And they asked him about allergies cause he sounded clogged up..he didn't mention it by himself... (ok, now I'll stop defending him...I'm just nervous cause in about 5minutes we'll see the truth clearly..)

OllyK , 3/15/10 8:02 PM

Ollyk, I just say things like that once in a while so that I don't seem like a rabid, blind fangirl!

stu , 3/15/10 8:12 PM

stu, I'm not even trying...I am a blind fangirl and it is not curable. :)

OllyK , 3/15/10 8:26 PM

it must be a tennis cap this time ::shrug::

rfzr , 3/15/10 10:07 PM

oh s**t!! I stopped watching because nole was winning easily and now i tune in nd see him trailing third set!! Come on nole perk up out there!!!

FEDistheGOAT , 3/15/10 10:17 PM

Phew.. just saved match points to hang on in the set... he really does the third degree on his fans doesn't he?

FEDistheGOAT , 3/15/10 10:38 PM

man my pred was almost PEFECT..lol...nole did well to save those mtch pnts, was aggressieve and stayed positive

vamosrafa , 3/15/10 11:12 PM

I was following tennistalk very often but this is my very first post, you'll understand as nole's fan. Nole showed maturity in this match again not playing at his best, but after series of 9 lost games he got over took the first game on his serve, broke and than all over again. Than 3 match points saved on his serve, everyone else would have exploded. Congratulations to our hero, congrats to ollyk, zare, stu and the other nole's fan. All the way to the title, AJDE NOLE !!!

donna , 3/15/10 11:35 PM

djokovic won. congrats to all his fans. But I have this to say, unless Djokovics game improves (especially his serve) he will not be able to get past Nadal in the semis.

tj600 , 3/16/10 12:57 AM

This match tonight was everything but GENTLE for us fans. Next time I'll wish for tight three sets, maybe then Nole ill win in straights. ;) Vamosrafa, little things make difference, thank God! ;)
donna, welcome! I'm very glad to see one more Nole fan here. We are not that numerous. Thank you for your congrats and same goes to you (and other Nole fans)! Our Nole became a real fighter! AJDE!!

OllyK , 3/16/10 12:59 AM

Nole ill* - haha... what a strange typo. :D I meant "will" of course. ;)

OllyK , 3/16/10 1:03 AM

So we go on... win is win...

zare , 3/16/10 1:13 AM

zareee, I was just mentioning you on tennis.x.. :)
And your "have faith" thing.. :) It worked today (as it usually does)! You are a smart smart man!! :)

OllyK , 3/16/10 1:19 AM

Look it's simple... he will win this tournament!
1. Ricky didn't predicted that:-)
2. Like in Dubai he's playing bad matches... but his weakness was always in head. Do you remember Nole without fire, flat as we used to see him last year.
3. He's becoming real fighter, he don't surrender anymore.
4 All those clumsy wins must be very good for his confidence...I am hoping that will bring back his first service...
5. And we mustn't forget...one week before he was in Belgrade... playing his guts of
on -3c...
So I am hoping he will be better...What else???

zare , 3/16/10 1:53 AM

zare, everything you said is true! :) Soo, that means we are going all the way to the title?! Okaay then, I trust you... :D Ajde, Noleee!

OllyK , 3/16/10 2:50 PM
