  • Roddick begins, Nalbandian presses on

    3/14/10 7:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick begins, Nalbandian presses on Andy Roddick will meet Yen-Hsun Lu as the USA's No. 1 player contests his Indian Wells opener on Sunday night. David Nalbandian and Gael Monfils are also in second-round action.

    (Q) Yen-Hsun Lu vs. (7) Andy Roddick

Lu and Roddick will be meeting for the third time in their careers when they are featured during Sunday's night session at the BNP Paribas Open. This will be their first encounter away from the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis, where Roddick scored straight-set wins over Lu in 2007 and again last month. Lu had a dismal 2009 season, but he is starting to play better of tennis of late. The world No. 103 of Chinese Taipei scored his fourth ATP match win of the year by blowing out Oscar Hernandez 6-1, 6-2 on Friday. Still, it's unlikely he will have enough to counter the big serves and forehand of Roddick. Count on Indian Wells' No. 7 seed advancing in two relatively competitive sets.

(WC) David Nalbandian vs. (22) Jurgen Melzer

Nalbandian's comeback is off to a solid start, and he will look to continue that trend on Sunday with a second career matchup with Melzer. The 28-year-old Argentine miss most of last season due to hip surgery, but he is 4-0 so far in 2010 (he withdrew after two victories last month in Buenos Aires). After winning the decisive singles rubber over Andreas Vinciguerra in Argentina's recent Davis Cup victory in Sweden, Nalbandian opened on Friday with a first-round win at the expense of Stefan Koubek. Melzer is also in fine form, as the 28th-ranked Austrian has already reached at least the quarterfinals of four events this year. Nonetheless, if Nalbandian is 100 percent physically he should take out Melzer in three tought sets.

    (12) Gael Monfils vs. Simon Greul

Greul will be looking to dismiss a second conesutive Frenchman on Sunday in second-round Indian Wells action. The 28-year-old German edged Richard Gasquet in a pair of tiebreakers on Friday and now he faces a first career encounter with Monfils. Greul, playing perhaps the best tennis of his career, registers two spots off his career-high at No. 58 in the world and he appears poised to climb further. Monfils, on the other hand, is struggling with more and more physical problems by the day. The world No. 15 has more talent than Greul (and more than many other players for that matter), but look for the hobbled favorite to go down in three sets.
