Play is scheduled to resume in rainy Delray Beach, as Ivo Karlovic and James Blake contest their second-round matches Thursday evening. The players take on respective opponents Daniel Brands and Robin Haase.
(2) Ivo Karlovic vs. Daniel Brands
Second seed Ivo Karlovic made a successful start on Tuesday, striking 19 aces en route to dismissing Philipp Petzschner of Germany, 6-3, 7-6. Karlovic, who entered the event ranked World No. 33, bids for his fourth quarterfinal berth of the season. The 30-year-old advanced to the final eight in Doha (lost to Davydenko), Zagreb (lost to Cilic) and Memphis, where he fell to eventual finalist John Isner.
The 100th-ranked Brands opened his Delray Beach debut with an first-round win over veteran wildcard Sebastian Grosjean. The 22-year-old German rallied from a set deficit to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory in one hour and 36 minutes. Tuesday’s success marked the first victory for Brands in 2010, as he crashed out early in four consecutive tournaments.
(7) James Blake vs. Robin Haase
Two-time finalist James Blake scored an opening-round win over fellow American Taylor Dent early Wednesday, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Rain had suspended play at 5-3 in the decider Tuesday night, forcing the seventh seed to return the following day. The 30-year-old regrouped after a disappointing run in Memphis, where he lost a first-round clash against No. 1 American Andy Roddick, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3). Blake aims for his second quarterfinal in 2010, adding to his run in Brisbane (lost to Monfils).
Haase, competing in his maiden Delray Beach tournament, took out American qualifier Robert Kendrick on Tuesday, 7-6, 7-6. With the victory, the 22-year-old won his first match since Chennai in early January.
