Andy Roddick faces compatriot Sam Querrey in the second semifinal of the day at the SAP Open. The winner moves ahead to contest the championship match against Fernando Verdasco on Sunday.
Top seed Andy Roddick bids for a fourth title in San Jose, set to take on countryman and seventh seed Sam Querrey on Saturday evening. The players have met four times previously, with Roddick holding a 3-1 advantage in the head-to-head series. Querrey took their last encounter, downing Roddick in round two of the Masters 1000 Cincinnati, 7-6, 7-6. Saturday’s match marks the fifth time the pair contests a battle on a hard court.
Roddick reached his eighth consecutive SAP Open final with a 7-6(5), 7-6(5) quarterfinal-round victory over fifth seed Tomas Berdych. The 27-year-old has competed well entering into the semifinal, recording early-round wins over qualifier Ryler DeHeart and Leonardo Mayer in straight sets.
Roddick remains on course to secure his second finals berth of the season, having advanced to the same stage during his title-winning run in Brisbane. With a victory on Saturday, the World No. 7 will make his 46th appearance in an ATP World Tour championship match.
The 31st-ranked Querrey looks to book his first tour final since New Haven, where he lost 6-4, 7-6 to current San Jose finalist Fernando Verdasco. The 22-year-old had not won a 2010 match prior to the SAP Open, as he suffered opening-round defeats in Auckland, Sydney, and the Australian Open.
Querrey made his way through to the final four after dismissing veteran American Michael Russell in straight sets. Like Roddick, Querrey has yet to drop a set this week, having downed Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-2 and Taylor Dent 6-4, 6-4.
