Roddick vs. Berdych headlines QF action in San Jose Andy Roddick will square off against Tomas Berdych for a place in the SAP Open semifinal Friday evening. The players are set to contest their seventh meeting on the ATP World Tour.

    (1) Andy Roddick vs. (5) Tomas Berdych

Top seed Andy Roddick enters into Friday’s quarterfinal holding a 4-2 advantage in the head-to-head series with fifth seed Tomas Berdych. The two last met at the start of the 2010 season, as a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 semifinal victory went the way of the American during his title-winning run in Brisbane. The pair will battle for the fifth time on a hard court, tied 2-2 lifetime.

Roddick looks to move into his fourth championship match at the SAP Open, having advanced to the same stage in 2004 (def. Fish), 2005 (def. Saulnier) and 2008 (def. Stepanek). The 27-year-old has enjoyed a relatively comfortable road to his eighth consecutive semifinal, knocking out early-round opponents Ryler DeHeart and Leonardo Mayer in straight sets.

Berdych, competing in his SAP Open debut, bids for his second semifinal of the year. The 24-year-old survived a tricky opening-round clash with American Wayne Odesnik, prevailing in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Berdych enjoyed an easier match in the round of 16, downing Jarkko Nieminen, 6-3, 6-2 in just 63 minutes.

    (2) Fernando Verdasco vs. (Q) Ricardas Berankis

Second seed Fernando Verdasco takes on qualifier Ricardas Berankis for a spot among the final four Friday afternoon. The Spaniard aims to secure his first semifinal since last November in Valencia, where he lost a three-set match to world No. 3 Andy Murray.

The 26-year-old made a successful SAP Open bow, earning a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Yen-Hsun Lu Wednesday night. Verdasco followed with another win on Thursday, defeating Benjamin Becker in straight sets. The Madrid native has served well throughout the week, tallying 27 aces heading into Friday’s quarterfinal.

The 255th-ranked Berankis pocketed his first Tour-level win of the season on Tuesday, rallying to dismiss American Robby Ginepri, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. The 19-year-old qualifier continued with a victory in the round of 16, taking out Bjorn Phau in straight sets.
