  • San Jose - Roddick, Querrey on course to reach QF

    2/11/10 9:03 PM | Kelli DeMario
San Jose - Roddick, Querrey on course to reach QF Tournament seeds Andy Roddick and Sam Querrey will highlight round of 16 action at the SAP Open on Thursday. The players aim for a place among the final eight.

    (1) Andy Roddick vs. Leonardo Mayer

Three-time SAP Open champion Andy Roddick is set for a first-time meeting with Leonardo Mayer in the second round Thursday evening. The world No. 7 came through his opening-round encounter with qualifier Ryler DeHeart on Wednesday, 6-1, 7-6, after trailing 3-0 in the second set. The Brisbane title-winner looks for his 11th win of the season. With a victory over Mayer, Roddick advances to the quarterfinal for the eighth consecutive year.

The 76th-ranked Mayer returns to action following his first-round dismissal of Ernests Gulbis. The Argentine, competing in his SAP Open debut, struck 10 aces and saved six of six break points en route to a 7-5, 6-4 win on Monday. The 22-year-old bids for his second quarterfinal berth of the season, having reached the same stage in Sydney (lost to Benneteau).

    (7) Sam Querrey vs. Taylor Dent

Seventh seed Sam Querrey faces compatriot Taylor Dent for their maiden clash late Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old captured his first win of the season on Tuesday, knocking out Teimuraz Gabashvili in 55 minutes, 6-3, 6-2. Querrey successfully rebounded after suffering three consecutive opening-round losses in Brisbane (lost to Blake), Sydney (lost to Korolev) and the Australian Open (Schuettler). The 6'6'' American, making his fifth appearance at the SAP Open, earned a quarterfinal spot in 2009.

Veteran Taylor Dent, currently ranked 77th, continues his comeback after sustaining a career-threatening spinal injury. The 28-year-old has climbed a remarkable 800 ranking positions since returning to the game in late 2008. Dent crushed a dozen aces during his opener with countryman Alex Bogomolov Jr., downing the qualifier in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. The Newport Beach native is contesting his fifth SAP Open.
