    2/10/10 9:33 PM | Kelli DeMario
San Jose- Roddick, Verdasco open bids Wednesday The top two seeds will be in action at the SAP Open, as Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco close singles competition Wednesday evening. The players look to earn safe passage into the round of 16.

    (1) Andy Roddick vs. (Q) Ryler DeHeart

World No. 7 and top seed Andy Roddick makes his ninth appearance in San Jose this week. The 27-year-old is three-times a champion at the SAP Open, having snagged the title in 2004, 2005 and 2008. Roddick begins the tournament in search of a second ATP World Tour crown in 2010, hoping to add to his successful run in Brisbane (def. Stepanek). The Austin native meets compatriot Ryler DeHeart for a first-time meeting Wednesday evening. Roddick, who bowed at the tournament in 2001, aims to advance to the round of 16 for the ninth consecutive year.

The 26-year-old DeHeart looks to collect his maiden win of the season. The American qualifier, competing in his first SAP Open, heads into the event ranked 226th. Primarily a Challenger Tour player, DeHeart qualified for the main draw in Doha, but was eliminated in the first round (lost to El Aynaoui).

    (2) Fernando Verdasco vs. Yen-Hsun Lu

Second seed Fernando Verdasco takes on tricky opening-round opponent Yen-Hsun Lu late Wednesday. The World No. 11 sees action for the first time since a fourth-round finish at the Australian Open in January (lost to Davydenko). The 26-year-old Spaniard is set to debut at the SAP Open, looking for his fourth career ATP World Tour title. Verdasco captured his third on the hard-court in New Haven in 2009, where he downed fellow San Jose seed Sam Querrey in straight sets.

The 113th-ranked Lu commences the week with a 2-3 season record. The 26-year-old suffered back-to-back first-round exits in Chennai (lost to Lacko) and the Australian Open (lost to Sorenson), but rebounded with a run to the quarterfinal in Johannesburg (lost to Monfils). Lu, who reached a career-high World No. 55 last April, is playing in his fourth SAP Open.
