  • Djokovic to face Kubot for quarterfinal berth

    1/24/10 5:13 PM | Vincent Glenn
Djokovic to face Kubot for quarterfinal berth Novak Djokovic will take on Lukasz Kubot on Monday for a place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic has met Lucasz Kubot on one previous occasion. The World No.3 defeated the Pole in the final of the inaugural Serbia Open in his hometown of Belgrade last year, claiming a 6-3, 7-6(0) victory.

Djokovic has played solid if unspectacular tennis so far in Melbourne this week. He saw off Daniel Gimeno-Traver in his first match before recovering from a set down to dispose of Marco Chiudinelli. The World No.3 put in his most impressive display in the last round, recording a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over a disappointing Denis Istomin.

Kubot will be playing in the fourth round of a Slam for the first time. His previous best performance at a Major was a round three showing at the 2007 French Open. The World No.86 didn’t drop a set in the first two rounds, registering wins over Mischa Zverev and Santiago Giraldo. He then claimed a walkover victory against Mikhail Youzhny when the Russian was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a wrist injury.

Djokovic will be hoping to save as much energy as possible for a potential quarterfinal showdown with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. His display against Istomin was certainly encouraging – he hit his forehand powerfully and made a number of clever forays into the net. Kubot is a solid, much improved player, but he’ll have his work cut out clinching even a set against such an experienced, classy opponent. Djokovic should move through in straight sets.

Ajde Nole !!!

I'm worried about Nole's lack of serious match practice before his QF with Tsonga. Sure Kubot played reasonably well in set 3, but Nole didn't raise his game enough until the last game or so to put him in his place...

Nole is the favourite for this AO. He has all the energy in the world now.

This was easy..as expected. :) Nole knows veeery well what to expect from Tsonga and what game level he needs to display to beat him. I don't think these easy wins are bad for him. He is fresh now for tougher challenges..Soo, ajde, Noleeee! :)
