Robin Soderling will kick off his Chennai campaign on Tuesday afternoon against Robby Ginepri. Also looking for spots in the second round are Stanislas Wawrinka and 2009 runner-up Somdev Devvarman.
(1) Robin Soderling vs. Robby Ginepri
Soderling and Ginepri will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they meet in the first round of the Chennai Open on Monday. Their only previous encounter came at the 2007 Hamburg Masters, where Soderling prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The top-seeded Swede has been on the rise ever since, whereas Ginepri has fallen on hard times. Soderling is up to a career-high of No. 8 in the world following a 2009 campaign in which he reached the French Open final and made it to the semifinals of the year-end championships in London. Ginepri's year was derailed by an appendectomy, and the 27-year-old American currently registers at No. 100 in the world. Count on Soderling taking this one in straight sets.
(3) Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Rohan Bopanna
Boppana will have the Indian crowd behind him on Monday, but he is clearly a huge underdog against Wawrinka. The world No. 391 is more of a doubles player and he has won just 11 matches at the ATP level for his career. A former Top 10 player, Wawrinka did not enjoy the best of seasons in 2009, but he still comes in at a solid 21st in the world. Bopanna will need to serve huge in order to have any shot at an upset, as Wawrinka should be able to dictate baseline rallies with his one-handed backhand. The Swiss in straight sets is the pick.
(WC) Somdev Devvarman vs. Rainer Schuettler
This is a rematch of what was supposed to have been a semifinal showdown at last year's Chennai Open. Schuettler, however, injured himself in doubles and pulled out, thus sending Devvarman into the title match. Given his memorable run to the final in 2009, it comes as no surprise that the world No. 124, India's highest-ranked singles player, was given a wild card into this tournament. He has every chance of making the most of it, too, against an out-of-form Schuettler. The German is 33 years old and has plunged to No. 85 in the world. He struggled mightily throughout the second half of last season and it's hard to imagine him turning things around in front of fans that are squarely behind his opponent. Schuettler could steal a set, but look for Devvarman to advance.
