  • Del Potro and Davydenko clash for final title of season

    11/29/09 12:56 AM | Cheryl Murray
Del Potro and Davydenko clash for final title of season Juan Martin Del Potro and Nikolay Davydenko have earned spots in Sunday’s World Tour Finals in London.

Both Nikolay Davydenko and Juan Martin Del Potro have been impressive coming into Sunday’s final at the Barclays World Tour Final. Davydenko in particular has hit a monumental milestone, beating Roger Federer for the first time ever on Saturday in 13 tries.

Del Potro has been equally impressive; he looks every bit as dangerous as he did in the US Open this September. The Argentine is clearly playing the tennis of his career, and these low-bouncing courts in London can only help his game.

Davydenko actually holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Del Potro, but their last match took place at the Masters event one year ago in Shanghai. Del Potro was tired and injured and surely not the caliber of player that he is today.

The Russian will have his chances at snagging this title. His hard court game is dangerous, as Roger Federer found out on Saturday. Still, Del Potro hits just a little bigger, and has a better serve.

Prediction – Del Potro in 3.

Hmmmmmm... dificult...I was for Davy...but #4 is in stake... so I will go for Delpo this time. I am sick of Andy... don't know why but that guy is ...irritating.
Everything...I mean everything... his face... his mouth wide open every five sec...spoilled crying... body language... and most af all his booooooooring defensive game.
On the other side...Delpo... he's simply nice guy... (remember his respect to Safin...)
...and his game is growing so fast...pleasure to watch...
And Davy... well if he win...it will be well deserved, no doubt. After all this years...of undesserved bad publicity...(btw...ExFed didn't forget to mention that...how cheap...).
So two good guys in final...let's hope for some spectacle..!

zare, liked your thoughts regarding Murray. Definitely the most irritating guy in the top 10

Probably at O2!!

My prediction for the match: If DelPo wins, Ricky will write that tennis is alive. If Davydenko wins, it's deader than a doornail.

But who cares about a bunch of baseline bangers anyway? Now how about the Bryans?! Talk about the impossible happening! They had to win their last four matches -- two in straight sets -- to win the No. 1 doubles spot, and they pulled it off. (Though it's obvious that Nestor and Zimonjic are better now.)

SP - completely wrong! thats what the entire tennis world will say.

I am one of few people around who respects Davydenko's game for what it is.

Oh mine, I'm so happy for Davydenko. What a match, what a performance. His biggest win in his career so far. He has beaten all of this year's slam champions - Nadal, Fed and Del Potro - in this tournament! What an achievement!

im super happy for him too. he deserved such a big title sometime at least..and yea he beat some amazing players. pretty brillaint week for him, and a great way to end this season.

There are a lot of lessons to be learnt from this win by Davydenko, starting with look where persistant hardwork, accuracy, and consistency can get you.

ed251137 , 11/29/09 5:41 PM

Hi homos and ed: yes, I've been at the O2 and it was fabu..lous.. I saw the top 5 play and must say I'm really pleased that Davydenko won, once you've got over how hard Delpotro hits the ball, he's really boring to watch. I was v. disappointed Fed did not beat him, but Fed was another one not at his best.
homos: ta for waterbombs..am just heaving them upwards..phew!!
