  • Youzhny headlines Day 1 action in Moscow

    10/18/09 10:02 PM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny headlines Day 1 action in Moscow Russia's own Mikhail Youzhny will be featured in Moscow on Monday afternoon as he takes on Haracio Zeballos. Pablo Cuevas and Yen-Hsun Lu are also in action.

Horacio Zeballos vs. (3) Mikhail Youzhny

Youzhny will open at the Kremlin Cup on Monday with a first-ever meeting against Zeballos. Ranked No. 32 in the world (as of Sunday) and seeded second in Moscow, Youzhny is a considerable favorite in this one. Furthermore, the Russian will obviously have the crowd behind him and he is fine form at the moment following a dismal first half of the season. Youzhny is 32-26 at the ATP level for the year and recently finished runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Tokyo.

Zeballos, meanwhile, is enjoying a breakout campaign in 2009. Although the 24-year-old Argentine has won just a single ATP match this season (and in his whole career), he is up to a career-high ranking of No. 55 in the world. Since the beginning of July, Zeballos has won three Challenger titles and finished runner-up in two others. Still, it will be a much tougher task for him on Monday. Count on Youzhny advancing in straight sets.

    (5) Pablo Cuevas vs. Yen-Hsun Lu

Cuevas and Lu will be squaring off for the first time when they do battle in the Moscow first round on Monday. Lu has not been playing well this season, and he registers at No. 70 in the world with a 10-22 match record for his 2009 campaign. However, the 26-year-old from Chinese Taipei is a solid hard-court player and that should give him a shot here.

In the midst of an outstanding year highlighted by a semifinal finish at a 500-point tournament in Hamburg, Cuevas has reached a career-high ranking of No. 45. The Argentine won a Challenger title two weeks ago in Uruguay. Not surprisingly, it came on clay, by far Cuevas' favorite surface. Although the No. 5 seed has the edge in current form, look for Lu to pull off an upset in three sets on a fast court.
