Marat Safin and Germany’s Rainer Schuettler will take to the court on Monday as the Shanghai Masters get under way.
Marat Safin vs. Mao-Xin Gong
Russia’s Marat Safin will have the benefit of playing a Chinese wildcard ranked 541 in the world. Mao-Xin Gong is a Futures level player, which is one step below Challengers. In fact, of the tournaments he has played in 2009, only one was a Challenger. Now he gets a shot at the main draw of a Masters event. Marat Safin is not the most consistent of tennis players. His ranking has dropped to 86 in the world, but his tennis is still suited to the fast hard courts of Shanghai. A loss to a player the caliber of Gong is highly unlikely. Safin in easy straight sets.
Rainer Schuettler vs. Martin Vassallo Arguello
This first round match is up for grabs to both players. Martin Vassallo Arguello has had an unfortunate streak of first and second round loses that dates all the way back to Indian Wells in March. Rainer Schuettler, the German veteran, has not suffered quite as badly this summer. His first/second round loss streak only goes back to s’Hertogenbosch in June. Either way, there is no heavy favorite despite the disparity in ranking (Vassallo Arguello is ranked 52, Schuettler 99). The surface actually favors the German, as Vassallo Arguello prefers to play on slower courts. Schuettler in 2.
