  • Robredo, Petzschner in first-round action

    10/11/09 8:43 PM | Ricky Dimon
Robredo, Petzschner in first-round action Tommy Robredo begins his Shanghai campaign on Monday against Michael Llodra. Philipp Petzschner also seeks a second-round berth as he takes on Florian Mayer.

    (Q) Michael Llodra vs. Tommy Robredo

Llodra and Robredo will be going head-to-head for just the third time in their careers when they do battle in the first round of the Shanghai Masters on Monday afternoon. They have split two previous encounters; Llodra prevailed on grass in 2004 before Robredo turned the tide last year on the indoor hard courts of Lyon.

Although Llodra should have an advantage on fast hard courts, Robredo has a major edge in current form. The veteran Spaniard is an impressive 41-22 for his 2009 campaign and he recently made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open before losing to Roger Federer. Llodra, on the other hand, is 13-13 this season and registers way down at No. 136 in the world (as of Sunday). The Frenchman can keep this competitive if he serves well, but Robredo should take it in straight sets.

    (Q) Florian Mayer vs. Philipp Petzschner

It will be the first career meeting between Mayer and Petzschner when the two Germans square off in the Shanghai first round on Monday. Petzschner is the heavy favorite on paper at No. 36 in the world. He endured a dismal start to the year, but recovered nicely and played well during the U.S. Open Series before blowing a huge lead against Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round of the U.S. Open.

Mayer, once ranked as high as 33rd back in 2004, has disappeared from the tennis scene in recent years, mostly due to physical problems. Still just 26 years old, Mayer is back on tour and registers at No. 85 in the world. He took James Blake to three sets last week in Beijing and came through Shanghai qualifying over the weekend. Look for Mayer to keep it close until Petzschner's power makes the difference in a three-setter.
