  • Isner featured in Bangkok's opening night session

    9/27/09 9:51 PM | Ricky Dimon
Isner featured in Bangkok's opening night session In-form American John Isner will contest Monday's night session in Bangkok against Thai wild card Kittipong Wachiramanowong. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is also in action.

(WC) Kittipong Wachiramanowong vs. (8) John Isner

Isner and Wachiramanowong will be meeting for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the opening round of the PTT Thailand Open on Monday night in Bangkok. Wachiramanowong, a 19-year-old Thai wild card, has played just nine ATP-level matches (with no victories) during his brief time as a professional.

Isner, on the other hand, is enjoying a breakout season on the pro tour. The 6'9'' American has been especially impressive on hard courts, reaching the fourth round at the Masters Series Indian Wells, the final at the Legg Mason Classic, and the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Isner stunned heavily-favored countryman Andy Roddick in a fifth-set tiebreaker during his memorable run in New York. Wachiramanowong will have little chance against his opponent's serve on fast indoor hard courts and almost no shot at what would be a colossal upset. Isner in easy straight sets is the pick.

    Thomaz Bellucci vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez

It will be the first encounter between Bellucci and Garcia-Lopez when the two players square off on Monday afternoon in Bangkok, but they have met once before on the Challenger circuit. Bellucci prevailed 6-4, 7-6(4) last year on the clay courts of Rabat, Morocco. Garcia-Lopez, however, should fare much better on hard courts. The 26-year-old Spaniard also does his best work on clay, but he is more than capable on fast surfaces and he advanced to the third round of the Masters Series Cincinnati this summer.

Bellucci lit up the clay-court Challengers in 2008 but has struggle at the ATP level this season. The 21-year-old Brazilian cannot be confident on indoor hard courts and his heavy topspin lefty forehand will not be nearly as effective. Count on Garcia-Lopez advancing in straight sets.
