  • Monaco in action as top remaining seed in Bucharest

    9/23/09 8:10 PM | Ricky Dimon
Monaco in action as top remaining seed in Bucharest Juan Monaco is the highest seed left in the Bucharest draw now that Victor Hanescu and Nicolas Almagro have crashed out. Monaco eyes a place in the quarterfinals on Thursday as he takes on Pere Riba.

Just three days into the tournament, the BCR Open Romania draw has been ravaged by upsets. No. 1 seed Victor Hanescu fell in his opening match, joined as a a first-round loser by No. 4 Igor Andreev and No. 7 Andreas Seppi. Second-seeded Nicolas Almagro said goodbye one round late when he succumbed to Fabio Fognini on Wednesday.

That leaves No. 3 Juan Monaco as the highest of four remaining seeded players (Monaco, No. 5 Albert Montanes, No. 6 Daniel Koellerer, and No. 8 Pablo Cuevas). On Thursday, Monaco will bid for a quarterfinal spot in Bucharest as he goes up against Pere Riba in what will be their first-ever encounter.

Monaco reached a career-high ranking of 14th in the world early last season, but a sprained ankle in February of 2008 derailed his chances of sustaining that momentum. Now bouncing back from a disappointing 2008 campaign, the 25-year-old Argentine is making his way back up the rankings and registers at No. 37 in the world. He owns an impressive 28-19 match record for the year after rolling over Brazilian qualifier Julio Silva 6-2, 6-4 in the Bucharest first round.

In Riba, Monaco will be meeting yet another qualifier. The 21-year-old Spaniard is ranked No. 157 and he is already enjoying one of the best weeks of his professional career. After qualifying for the main draw, Riba dispatched tough clay-courter Frederico Gil 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 for his second ATP-level victory of the season and third of his career.

Now the question is how Riba will handle the pressure of playing for what would obviously be his first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of an ATP event. The fact that he has to go head-to-head with Monaco only makes things even more difficult for the underdog. Monaco is both ruthless and consistent from the baseline and he will make his opponent earn every point. Riba should be playing with confidence and could make it relatively competitive, but winning a set could be asking too much. Look for Monaco to advance in straights.

I heard that Juan Monaco was yet to break a record to become the winner of most won events on clay of 2009. I need to comprehend of it.....Could any-one?.....To myself, Juan is a different person than I originally imagined him. I might have seen him in 2003 or 04, and R Garros was the first time I caught his facial fully. I did somehow manage to catch the end of his round with A Murray in Rome (on the net) that Juan won. But I missed the 'goings on' waiting for R Nadal, a newly proud fan I was. So when I saw Monaco in R Garros, the first round against Tsonga, I was taken aback of the massive difference. He was luminous and interestingly mysterious.....An awesome player. I am very happy for J Monaco. Now is the time...

TAFARIANA - Monaco could win the most MATCHES on clay this season. He needs to win one or two more this week. Nadal, of course, has the best winning PERCENTAGE on clay this season at 22-2.

But if Monaco wins this tournament, he will finish something like 29-12.

I'm rooting for Pico to win, I think he really deserves it after what he's accomplished this year. I still haven't gotten over that match he played against Gonzalez in *snaps fingers* Rome, was it? It's amazing..the difference ONE point can make in a match. One point can haunt you like Auntie Fey's Boston Cream Pie...

As for his match against Andy Murray. I recall distinctly warning Murray NOT to underestimate Pico. As Murray was walking onto court I warned him. And what did he do? He underestimated Pico. And what happened? Pico played his game, and Murray got annoyed. And what did he get? What he deserved for having that kind of an attitude: the boot. *sigh* Rule of thumb: Don't underestimate your opponent. Even if you're heads and shoulders above them and you know it and THEY know it, and the world knows it, just...DON'T do that, don't. It's not good for you, it's not good for the sport, it's not good for overall health and harmony. Plus, it looks yucky.

I agree Tafarinana, he's one of my favorites since I've caught a few of his matches this year. I hadn't really known anything about him before this tennis season. I also recall his match versus Tsonga in *taps table* Miami (??) It was one heck of a match! So much fun! I was really torn because I also like Tsonga, but I felt that Pico was playing so well and with such intensity..I wanted him to wiiin *whines* But once it was over I was happy for Tsonga.

Pico (as I've learned Monaco's called), strikes me as one of those extremely hard-working players (like Daveeed Ferrer and Andy Roddick). I love that in a player. I've also learned that he used to rock these awesome dreds and he's one of Rafa's close buddies (proof of their bromance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0Gkr28beI0&feature=related )

There are also awesome videos of them gaming together on YouTube XD. He fights so hard on court, is scrappy and has a very nice personality. Seems sweet and like Daveeed I have a soft spot for him.

I love meeting new players that I haven't known before, especially when I turn out to like them and they become one of my favorites ^_^ (Verdasco is also a player I've just met this season...I'm still on the fence about this guy....maybe it's the hair? But he and Rafa teamed up to give us one of the most epic matches EVER during the AO semi-final. I still get shivers watching highlights from that match!)

So, you go Monaco! Win this title already! *looks at clock* Is it really THAT late?! O_O'

Or early? I suppose it depends on one's perspective...or math skills.

Most unfortunately, for me, it was about four weeks ago I lost all contact with a certain privacy to be able for a view of 'tennis' on the net. Thus I'm not sure if the Romania Open is on there. But, I can try again another way. Poor surroundings can be a 'major' cause. So far, so good.....Just a try!

Well.., we are not gonna get any of it until 5am Friday/tomorrow morn, of course. He, Mono, is about to win the first set. Am hoping for a better result anyway. Won't be long, but considering that it's always secured out there, is a wonder marvellous,,

Alas, I've located the 'origine' through this new one. Still can't view the B-chrst Open. It looks as if I might miss out altogether by the silence. Everything else is working in the Streams. I'll just refill my memory and see if I can find some clue to view the event. Mind all, out here in the Pacific, we never got to view Potro & Monac's match at the U S Open, though an Aussie talent was viewed 'three' times in it's all but important viewing hours. Potro had became runner-up at Montrl and winner of Wshgtn DC Open a few weeks before AND winner, of the Heineken Open 09. Subtly nice. How's all?

When our mother passed young in 1991, at 40, a very tall, intelligent (also a 'master' on the sewing machine), fair skinned beautiful lady who always had the longest black hair, her body was laid in our lounge room for two straight days. Her hair received a cut. Looked as if just sleeping. My 'sis' looks like her alot except me. Mother's was one of the biggest Funerals I'd seen, together with my best friend who passed a year later of cancer. Her father was about to become a NZ Minister.
The (MiniArbre) comment above 'reminds me' of such an event though I have always in my childhood experience thy sort of forbiddy happenings. The process can be healing with the families and diff churches at the final services. But YES, I have only just woke to 'find' the TENNIS.. / BUCHAREST / METZ MASTERS on the Livestream.... THANK GODT.
