The Open de Moselle will kick off on Monday with Rainer Schuettler and Nicolas Mahut taking to the court.
Rainer Schuettler vs. Bjorn Phau
Believe it or not, Rainer Schuettler is actually ranked lower than countryman Bjorn Phau. Schuettler’s ranking dropped all the way to No. 93 in the world. He failed to defend the massive number of points he had accrued from his semifinal run to Wimbledon in 2008. Phau’s resume might not be as impressive as Schuettler’s, but at the moment he sits 12 spots higher at No. 81. Schuettler has a 2-0 head-to-head advantage over Phau. Their most recent match took place early this year in Chennai. Neither player has been impressive of late, but Schuettler seems to have Phau’s number. Schuettler in 2.
Nicolas Mahut vs. Michael Berrer
Big-serving Frenchman Nicolas Mahut will battle Germany’s Michael Berrer for a spot in the Metz second round. Mahut has seen a steady rankings slip all season long. The Frenchman is now ranked 180 in the world. He spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit, where he still enjoys some success on faster surfaces. Berrer has enjoyed more success than Mahut, but the German is still ranked outside the top 100 (126). The two men have never met before, but the quicker indoor surface should give Mahut a leg up because of his big serve. Mahut in 3.
