Marcos Baghdatis vs. (Q) Frederico Gil
Marcos Baghdatis looks to capture his second career win over Federico Gil on Monday. The Cypriot captured their only previous meeting during Davis Cup competition this year, defeating Gil in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.
The 24-year-old heads into the Pilot Pen with a 16-13 season mark. Baghdatis missed a chance to qualify for the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters last week, falling to American Robert Kendrick in straight sets. The Cypriot has collected two quarterfinal-round berths in 2009, finishing among the final eight in Johannesburg and Delray Beach. Baghdatis returns to New Haven for the first time since 2006.
The 110th-ranked Gil makes his second stop on the US Open series this week. The 24-year-old lost a first-round match in Washington DC, going down to Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets. Gil, a semifinalist in Johannesburg and Costa do Sauipe in early 2009, holds a modest 15-14 record on the year.
Simone Bolelli vs. Christophe Rochus
Simone Bolelli and Christophe Rochus clash for the first time early Monday afternoon. The 23-year-old Italian returns to action after suffering an early exit in Cincinnati. Bolelli passed through the qualifying rounds at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, but crashed out to Philipp Petzschner in the first round, 7-6, 6-3. The Umag quarterfinalist, posting a modest 13-16 record in 2009, is competing in his second Pilot Pen tournament. Bolelli dropped a first-round match to compatriot Fabio Fognini in 2008, 2-6, 7-5, 4-6.
The 30-year old Belgian veteran hopes to win his first ATP World Tour-level match since the French Open. After battling into the third round in Paris, Rochus has failed to post a victory in six consecutive events. Rochus makes his third appearance the Pilot Pen on Monday.
