France’s Marc Gicquel will take on Argentine clay courter Martin Vassallo-Arguello in the first round of Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Schick.
Depsite his slide down the rankings (he is No. 77), Marc Gicquel has had a few good results during the North American hard court swing this summer. He made quarterfinals in Indianapolis and the round of 16 in Washington. Gicquel also had an impressive result in Rotterdam earlier this winter. His ranking was not sufficiently high enough to make the main draw; he was forced to go through qualifying. The effort was worthwhile – he advanced all the way to the quarterfinals there before going out to eventual winner Andy Murray.
Martin Vassallo Arguello has had a dreadful year by professional standards. The Argentine put in a good showing at the clay court tournament in Acapulco, where he reached the semifinals. Since then (February), he has not managed to get past the second round of any tournament. His ranking is 49 in the world, but Gicquel is playing better tennis at the moment.
Expect Gicquel to use the court speed to his advantage. Vassallo-Arguello, like many South Americans, is a clay court specialist. He is a baseline grinder and will likely have difficulty handling Gicquel’s pace of shot. The Frenchman in straight sets.
