Lucky loser Julien Benneteau will try to stretch his fortunes another round when he takes on Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the third round.
Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has already beaten two quality hard court players en route to the third round. His big win came in the first round, where he took out fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. He also surprised a returning-to-form Mikhail Youzhny in the second round on Wednesday. He now looks to lucky loser Julien Benneteau of France.
Benneteau would not have been in the draw at all except that Juan Martin Del Potro pulled out of Cincinnati at the last minute due to fatigue. Taking Del Potro’s place afforded Benneteau a first round bye, something awarded only to the top 8 players in the world (Del Potro is No. 6 at the moment). He went into his second round match against Jurgen Melzer completely fresh, while Melzer had played nearly 3 hours the day before to get past Feliciano Lopez. Not surprisingly, Benneteau advanced.
Garcia-Lopez and Benneteau have split wins in their two meetings. The Spaniard won their encounter on clay, Benneteau took the hard court match. Despite Garcia-Lopez’s form this week in Cincinnati, he is still largely a clay court player. Benneteau has a big-hitting game that is at its best on faster surfaces. The Frenchman for the win.
