Dmitry Tursunov will meet fellow Russian Igor Kunitsyn on Monday in Halle, Germany. Tommy Haas is also seeking a place in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open.
Igor Kunitsyn vs. (6) Dmitry Tursunov
Kunitsyn and Tursunov will be doing battle at the ATP level for the fourth time in their careers when they help kick off the grass-court season at Halle, Germany's Gerry Weber Open on Monday. Tursunov leads the head-to-head series 2-1, and they have met four times in Challengers/Futures/Qualifiers. Tursunov also won three of those four encounters. Halle's No. 6 seed, however, has been plagued by injuries and he did not play a single match in between the Masters Series Miami and the French Open. Kunitsyn would like to be playing his countryman on a slower surface, but he still should have more than enough against a rusty Tursunov. Kunitsyn in three sets is the pick.
Tommy Haas vs. Stefan Koubek
Both Haas and Koubek are over 30 years old, but they have met just once in their careers. They also have not played in a decade; Haas won their only previous meeting 6-3, 6-2 at the 1999 Masters Series Paris. The veteran German, despite dealing with injury problems earlier this season, is heavily favored to make it 2-0 against Koubek on Monday. He reached the fourth round of the French Open last week and led Roger Federer two sets to love before succumbing to the eventual champion. Koubek, meanwhile, is just 7-7 at the ATP level this season. Look for Haas to advance in straight sets.
(8) Rainer Schuettler vs. Marc Gicquel
This is yet another battle between players over 30 years of age. Surprisingly, these two veterans have never squared off head-to-head at any level. Schuettler is technically the favorite on paper as the No. 8 seed, but he has no business whatsoever being seeded at ATP events right now. The German's ranking is inflated as a result of a surprising run to last year's Wimbledon semifinals, but he is struggling to win matches of any kind at the moment. Gicquel won a Challenger title in Bordeaux, France last month and is coming off a third-round appearance at Roland Garros. Gicquel should take this one with relative ease.
