Wildcard entrant Marcos Baghdatis joins tournament seeds Jeremy Chardy and Mikhail Youzhny in the first round of play at the AEGON Championships Monday afternoon.
Jeremy Chardy (12) vs. Sam Querrey
Twelfth-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France will meet American Sam Querrey in the opening round on Monday. Chardy heads into Monday’s match up a respectable 17-13 for the season. The 22-year-old, who reached a career-high World No. 39 in May, makes his tournament debut this week. Chardy plays the unseeded Querrey for the first time Monday afternoon.
The 21-year-old Querrey, competing in his second Queen’s Club event, is 15-12 on the year. The American looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since the Masters Series Indian Wells in March. Querrey aims for his first win at Queen’s Club, having lost an opening-round clash to Frenchman Olivier Patience in 2008, 5-7, 7-5, 4-6.
Mikhail Youzhny (14) vs. Oscar Hernandez
Mikhail Youzhny, seeded 14th this week, takes on Oscar Hernandez in first-round action on Monday. The 26-year-old Russian enjoyed solid form in May, securing a semifinals appearance in Kitzbuhel and a finals berth in Munich. Youzhny, continuing to regroup after his rankings free-fall over the last year, enters the Queen’s Club event 16-12 for the 2009 season. The Russian returns to this event for the first time since 2001. Youzhny notched a 7-6, 6-3 opening-round win over Andy Roddick to record his only Queen’s Club victory to date. He faces veteran Spaniard Oscar Hernandez Monday afternoon.
Hernandez, primarily known as a clay-courter, has yet to win a match at Queen’s Club. The Spaniard lost in the first round of the tournament in 2007, falling to Danai Udomchoke of Thailand.
Marcos Baghdatis (WC) vs. James Ward (WC)
Former World No. 8 and Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis returns to the AEGON Championships for the first time since 2005. The Cypriot received a wild-card into the tournament and hopes to regain control of his slumping career. He enters into the event 11-8 on the season. The 23-year-old failed to make it out of the opening round in 2005, bowing out to Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in three sets.
Fan-favorite Baghdatis showed some promise earlier this season, advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournaments in Johannesburg and Delray Beach. The Cypriot, who reached his career-high ranking in August of 2006, has fallen out of the top 100 three times in 2009.
Monday’s meeting marks the first battle between Baghdatis and the 225th-ranked Ward.
