  • Gonzalez gets Hanescu in fourth round

    5/31/09 4:22 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gonzalez gets Hanescu in fourth round Fernando Gonzalez will take on Victor Hanescu instead of Gilles Simon in their round of 16 match.

No. 7 seed Gilles Simon was to be the fourth round opponent for Chilean Fernando Gonzalez; Romania’s Victor Hanescu had different ideas. The Romanian dispatched the struggling Simon in easy straight sets in the third round, so instead of a player ranked inside the top 10, Gonzalez gets No. 33 Hanescu instead.

Hanescu and Gonzalez have met just once in their long careers, but that match, which Gonzalez won, was way back in 2004. Their current form is a far better predictor of the outcome of the match. Unfortunately for Hanecsu, Sunday’s result is not likely to offer a different result. Gonzalez seems to have found the range on his killer forehand again.

The Romanian has not been spectacular on clay this year. His best results were two quarterfinals in Casablanca and Kitzbuhel. He does not have enough weapons in his arsenal to stick with Gonzalez over a best of five set match.

Prediction – Gonzalez in straight sets.

There should be a law against Gonzo's forehand! :P

They haven't passed the law yet!

Gonz has taken first 2 sets: 6-2 6-4

lolz remi, here we go again....apparently the lawmakers are yet to draft or propose regulation to limit the force applied to forehand because so far no incident of arms disentanglement yet to be accounted.

He's killing Hanescu with that brutal forehand...impressive!

...and the match is over, Gonzo won 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 and the first one to get through Quarterterfinals.

Murray-Cilic winner simply doesn't have much of a chance. At all.

RickyDimon , 5/31/09 2:07 PM

is gonzo anything of a threat to rafa?

Sib69 , 5/31/09 2:11 PM

not on crushed brick surely....

remi , 5/31/09 2:16 PM

Murray will have a big chance if he wins today. People tend to underestimate how mentally tough he is.

orion , 5/31/09 2:37 PM

Wow..if Murray somehow manages by sheer will to beat Gonzo, the top half of the draw will have its top seed semifinal, and not the bottom half! who would have known!

HOLY! It does seem like that was a ridiculous comment before but Goni won which is just amazing. Overall, I am very amazed the reigning king has been de-crowned. O'well, will be more next year. Every end is a new beginning.......yuz..

tanna , 6/1/09 3:54 AM

Since actually that there is nowhere to comment, I thought I might say the match of the Gonjo and Sods was exciting last night in the semi-finals. A close call but I just couldn't see where Gon once again would have closed it out with Sods right there with him.....More better luck next year,
