Gonzalez, Cilic in action on Day 2 Top level talent Fernando Gonzalez and Marin Cilic headline an action-packed Tuesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

Fernando Gonzalez (12) vs. Jeremy Chardy

World No. 13 Fernando Gonzalez will take to the court against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy for a first-round encounter on Tuesday. The Chilean star, playing in his seventh tournament in Rome, reached the final in 2007, losing to Rafael Nadal. Gonzalez began the 2009 season in solid form, winning the Vina del Mar title over Jose Acasuso, 6-1, 6-3. The 28-year-old made his way to the semifinals in Barcelona a week ago, falling to finalist David Ferrer 6-2, 2-6, 6-7. Chardy, who reaches a career-high World No. 42 ranking this week, made his way to the finals in Johannesburg before losing to compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Gonzalez and Chardy have never played.

    Prediction: Gonzalez in two.

Marin Cilic (15) vs. Christophe Rochus

World No. 15 Marin Cilic is set for a second-round match with Christophe Rochus of Belgium. The Croat came through his opening-round encounter with ease, dismissing Italian wildcard Flavio Cipolla 6-2, 6-2. The 20-year-old added two ATP World Tour titles to his resume in 2009, capturing the titles in Chennai and Zagreb. The 30-year-old Rochus, ranked 55th in the world, breezed through round one in an hour, defeating Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Cilic and Rochus meet for the first time on Tuesday.

Prediction: Cilic to advance in straight sets.

    Jose Acasuso vs. Janko Tipsarevic

World No. 44 Jose Acasuso will meet Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia in a first-round match Tuesday afternoon. The veteran Argentine, who reached a career-high World No. 20 in 2006, returns for a sixth time to the Rome tournament. Acasuso made a strong start on clay in 2009, battling into the finals of Vina del Mar and the semifinals of Costa do Sauipe, Buenos Aires, and Acapulco. World No. 65 Tipsarevic, playing in his second event in Rome, has slipped down the rankings over the last year. The 24-year-old Serb comes into the tournament 8-9 for 2009, reaching the quarterfinals of Chennai in January. Acasuso and Tipsarevic have split two career meetings, the Serb winning a hard-fought, first-round match at the 2009 Masters Miami, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Prediction: Edge goes to Acasuso on clay. The Argentine in three.
