Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will duke it out in an all-French round of 16 encounter at the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday.
World No 8 Gilles Simon cruised in his opening match, defeating veteran Australian Lleyton Hewitt, 6-1, 6-2. The Frenchman had a tougher battle against German Rainer Schuettler in round three, rallying from a set down to notch a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory. Simon, five times an ATP World Tour title winner, is playing in his fourth tournament in Miami. The seventh seed reaches the round of 16 for the first time in his career. He faces countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga early Tuesday afternoon.
World No. 11 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a perfect four of four sets played this week, has turned in a spectacular showing in Miami. The Frenchman crushed his second-round opponent Augustin Calleri of Argentina, 6-1, 6-1, in 54 minutes. Tsonga continued his winning ways, dismissing American qualifier Robert Kendrick 7-5, 6-4 in the third round. The 10th seed, looking very solid on serve, has clocked a total of 16 aces in two match wins. Tsonga is playing in his second Sony Ericsson Open; he reached the round of 32 in 2008, losing to countryman Julien Benneteau.
Simon and Tsonga last met in a highly-contested round of 64 match in Rome in 2008, with Simon capturing the win, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Prediction: Tsonga in straight sets.

RickyDimon, You think Simon will win or it will be game in 3 sets? :)

Two of my favourite players on court brilliant! Hope its a good UK time. Ricky come off the fence or r u going 4 Tsonga in 3?

Tsonga in 3 if he's on, I think. If he loses focus, the crafty Gilles "Sneaky" Simon will take it from him like he took his French #1 rank.
I like them both. Too bad one has to lose.

As mara2 said, I like them both, who knows what's going to be, I don't dare to make any prediction, but frankly I'd love Simon to win...

Can't stand watching girley defensive players like Simon, Murray and Nadal. Just blocking the ball back and waiting for errors from your opponent is just whimpy. Hope Tsonga goes through.

Perhaps you shouldn't use the word 'girly' in a derogatory way if you don't know how it is spelled. I hope the stainless steel sprite steals it from Tsonga.

Pulling for Simon. He knows how to play Tsonga. Simon is one of the best movers out there and he can hit all the spots. I'm hoping for a "coming of age" moment!

Simon's approach is quite boring and defensive there are no winners making so I hope Tosonga can make it he is talented self confident and he makes winners????.go Tosonga

tennislover - I guess you stopped watching Simon play tennis late in 2008?
RickyDimon , 3/31/09 5:05 PM
AndMen - I will go with Simon in three. But I won't be surprised at all if it's Tsonga in three. If this ends in straights, I think it will be Simon. But who knows. This is just an awesome matchup.

So Tsonga wins it. Congrats to him. Probably not the finish Djokovic was hoping for.

I imagine Djoker would have lost to either one, but yes, he would have preferred Simon. No way he beats Tsonga if Tsonga plays like he did in sets 2 and 3 against Simon.
