Nikolay Davydenko is back after missing the Australian Open due to injury. The Russian will take on countryman Igor Andreev in first-round action in Rotterdam.
Perennial top five player Nikolay Davydenko returns to action on Monday after being sidelined from the Australian Open with a left heel injury. The Russian is known for his outstanding consistency and he can very often be found in the later stages of most tournaments he enters. His opponent is not the best first-round foe he could have hoped for.
Igor Andreev was once strictly a clay court player, but that is no longer the case. He most recently advanced to the third round in Melbourne, beating Ernests Gulbis of Latvia along the way. Andreev has a tendency to play retrieving tennis, which can get him in trouble on hard courts, but he has been working on being more aggressive on faster surfaces.
Ordinarily, Davydenko would be the clear favorite. He's beaten Andreev the last two times they have met. His hard, flat groundstrokes are just the sort that gives Andreev problems on hard courts – but that is only the case if Davydenko is completely healthy. If Davydenko is still having any trouble with his foot, Andreev could definitely give him trouble.
The prediction - Davydenko in straight sets.
