  • Djokovic ready for battle of the Balkans

Djokovic ready for battle of the Balkans There may be more than just tennis at stake as Novak Djokovic takes on Amer Delic for a place in the last 16. Balkan pride is also on the line !

Delic may compete under the Stars and Stripes flag now but he originally hails from Bosnia and he has an energetic group of followers. Delic came back from 2 sets to love down to win an epic 5 setter against Paul-Henri Mathieu 1-6, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 9-7 but that was only part of the drama. During the match security had to be called, Serbian fans entered the arena after the end of Janko Tipsarevic's match prompting a mini-stand off between them and Delic's Bosnian supporters. Things grew progressively rowdier prompting an angry reaction from Mathieu in the post-match press conference, the Frenchman declaring Delic's fans had "shamed the sport."

There's a little bit of apprehension ahead of the match with Djokovic, another Serb who will have an even bigger band of fans.

Delic is hoping that the only newsworthy action takes place on the court, "I couldn’t control any of what happened against Mathieu," he said. "I was trying to, but I felt bad and I apologised to him right after it happened. It’s tough, obviously. I like those fans - they’re getting me through these matches - but I think today was bad at the times when the other side came across."

He's played Djokovic once before, a close match at Wimbledon 2007. Djokovic won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 on the way to the semis.

Delic possesses a huge serve and has great physical conditioning so the heat is not an issue. He'll need it having been through 2 tough 5 setters now.

Djokovic has been asserting his claim as one of the favourites for the title to the press this week and after some impressive displays from Nadal and Murray, he could do with showing something special on court in the next couple of rounds. Maybe this is his chance.

Prediction: Delic to run out of steam, Djokovic in 3.

Delic's not good enough to defeat Nole, except Nole goes crazy and plays some really bad tennis. Nole in straight, and relatively easy sets.

Delic plays exceptionally, while Novak struggles. Hopefully it's temporary.

Surprise surprise, Delic managed to take a set off Nole...but Nole's experience saved him. And it's wonderful to see that rapport and hug between Nole and Delic despite the antagonism between their fans.

absolutely great stuff in this match. Solid tennis, and even better sportsmanship.

Delic was exceptional. His serve and one-handed backhand were excellent. Overall Nole managed to pull a rabitt out of the hat, to win. His first serve was OK, but his forehand was off. On a bigger stage with a different opponent and of course if he wants to make it far in this tournament, he will have to take it to the next level. On a positive note, he proved mental stability like never before and I commend him for that, but if he can combine that with fire and accuracy he will, I guess have everything coming together. Overall, a win is a win and he is moving on!

Delic for the moment looked like R. F. but with much much big power. Djokovic showed exceptional mental strenght in decisive moments but his shots were stiff, pressure I guess. He was missfiring his trademark shots.

If Djokovic can win his fourth round, his quarterfinal match will be FROSTY regardless of opponent - either ROBREDO or RODDICK. Both had controversy with Djokovic at the US Open last year.

not neccessarilly ... people often get into awkward situations but can be inteligent enough to overcome issues. after this match i'm positive that Novak will advance.

Good match. All credit to Delic for playing well; but Novak's forehand was way off. He managed to pull off the serves at the crucial moments though; and given the fact that Delic played really well, its a positive sign he got through without having to go the distance.

For a moment i was getting annoyed by Delic's mannerisms, he seemed like a wannabe federer. I don't know if this is the case, its just what I felt sometimes. Great sportsmanship from the two though.

The match Im waiting for is Safin - Fed. Alan Trengrove has predicted an upset, I think fed will make it in four. Hoping for some Safin magic though.

Again my dearest Novak made me worried, yes he won, but still have problems with forehand, mentally, he was good enough to overall some unexpected problems, I do agree with few people over here regarding Delic try to play as Federer, even he looks like him, wearing his tennis shoes (I suppose), have to say, he impressed me a lot, who would say he's ranking 100 and something, I'm not quite sure, finally, at the end of match, both guys has shown their sportsmanship, as a matter of fact, Novak said, they're pretty good friends, this AO telling all of us, how many good players are over there, not only first 10 players, and how much is exhausted play they need all the time, simply, we can't exclude anyone at the moment, so it'll be tough for our Nole, but I do believe in him forever, go dear, go...

I won't blame Delic for being a Fed wannabe? Safin wished he is in Fed's shoes. Who wouldn't want to be Fed?

torres9 , 1/23/09 11:18 AM

there is no sense to discuss with you torres again, you're lost case...

All I can say is that Djokovic has his work cut out for him! He is playing Bagdatis next and Bagdatis looked good. Accurate groundstrokes, positive, on a mission and ready for challenges. On the other end, Rodick looks better than ever. His forehand and serve are ferocious and he is moving better than last year. Not to mention Federer and how good he looked against Safin, but than again, Safin only challenged him in the last set. Overall, lots of work to be done by the defending champion, and it will require not only taking it to the next level, making sure all the technical elements of his game come together, but also showing a "Burning Desire" to get the job done. Good luck and may the best win.

I have to say that Dokovic and Delic had a very good match. Also I would like to mention the fact that Novak was very lucky to escape in four sets and not go to the fifth as that is always dangerous not to mention terribly tiring especially on Australian heat. Also things look very interesting this year at AO. Novak does not look sharp as he did last year. No one is sure about Nadal as he has not been tested yet in this tournament. Andy is always what I call an enigma to everyone he can have a great match one day and fall apart the next. However one thing is for sure Federer looks great this year and it has nothing to do with his win over Safin it is the fact that he is making the shots he could not make for the most part of last year. Backhand look lethal again and if that shot holds than the forehand is only going to get better as he takes off pressure for winners of that shot. Also I think that courts are playing much faster this year probably due to all the heat and humidity. So things should be very interesting and I am sure we will see some great matches. Oh and at the end you people seriously can not consider that Delic could ever hope to be anything like Federer if that was his hope he failed rather miserably.

"Oh and at the end you people seriously can not consider that Delic could ever hope to be anything like Federer if that was his hope he failed rather miserably"

no one thinks that, no worries, your RF is quite safe in his uniqueness, some of us just mentioned that in some moments his game resembled Roger's (backhand slice, backhand cross court, backhand parallel, net play) ....

posmatrac , 1/23/09 6:35 PM

this is what Delic wrote on his blog before the match:

"As we all know, Bosnians and Serbs have had some differences in the past, however this is not the place nor time to settle those differences. Novak and I are tennis players playing in one of the greatest settings in the World of Tennis. I am only hoping for a fair fight that all the fans will enjoy, with the key word being "enjoy." Thats what we are all here for to enjoy moments like these..."

RickyDimon , 1/23/09 10:46 PM

Great performance by Delic who was, to my humble opinion, better of the two. Novak really was nowhere to his best missfiring and performing bad lobs. Obviously, the heat did not suit him and luckily, the match didn't strech to the fifth set where, I am affraid, things wouldn't have been easier for him.

I was really impressed with Delic and now wonder how come he didn't make a bit bigger name for himself in tennis. Anyways, best of luck to both of them, specially to Novak tomorrow against that fiesty Buggzy ;)
