Paul-Henri Mathieu from France will take on Japan's new tennis star Kei Nishikori for a spot in the semifinals of the Brisbane International.
Kei Nishikori took the tennis world by storm last spring when he came from out of nowhere to win the title in Delray Beach. His results have somewhat inconsistent since. For most of the season, he struggled to get out of the first two rounds of tournaments, but he came on at the end of the season. He made the round of 16 at the US Open, where he lost to Juan Martin Del Potro. He also made the semifinals in Stockholm.
Mathieu sits thirty spots above Nishikori at No. 31 in the world. The Frenchman played some of the best tennis of his career in 2008. His best result was a final showing in Metz, where he lost to Dmitry Tursunov. Mathieu is the more experienced player, but Nishikori is clearly on the way up. The Japanese man has already beaten a seeded player in Brisbane. He took out Tomas Berdych in the second round in convincing fashion.
Another upset could be on the docket for Brisbane. Nishikori in three.
