For the first time since 2005, the Masters Cup will have a different champion. Roger Federer has won the title four out of the past five years. This year it will be either Nikolay Davydenko of Russia or Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Surprisingly, two players from the gold group will contest Sunday’s Masters Cup final. Djokovic and Davydenko have already played this week, with Djokovic edging out the Russian in a tight three-set match. Davydenko’s match on Saturday, however, was far less complicated and much shorter than Djokovic’s.
The Serb battled Gilles Simon of France in his semifinal. Simon took the first set, and Djokovic barely nabbed the third 7-5. The match lasted almost three hours. Coming back to play on Sunday against an opponent of the caliber of Davydenko is a tough ask, even for a player like Djokovic. The Serb has proven this week that he can beat Davydenko, but he was not battling fatigue at the time.
If Davydenko can maintain the level of play that he has displayed this week, he should win Sunday’s match. He has been successful keeping his unforced errors to a minimum, and his groundstrokes have been remarkably accurate. Few would have predicted Davydenko as the winner, or even to make the finals, but he has a good shot now at the whole thing.

great match...davydenko could have put up more fight..but djoko was just too good.
janhavi , 11/16/08 11:45 AM
Wow janhavi criticising Davydenko!?!?! You should respect the players you know since they are the ones slogging it out there!!!!
jean , 11/16/08 12:26 PM
im not critcising him jean..grow up..he was incredibly close the last time they played...i was just not expecting it so easy..because davydenko has the game to beat the best..
janhavi , 11/16/08 12:30 PM
I am happy that Djokovic won because of the so called tennis experts, Björn Borg and Mats Willander. Never ever they have said that they belive in Djokovic. They allways talk about Murray, Tsonga and Simon and even Gasquet that haven´t done nothing yet.
They should be ashamed of themself. Maybe he´s not coming from the right tennisland? If he would be number 1 in the world even then he wouldn´t be popular. Federer would be more popular even if he´s a diva and can´t say that the opponent played better and that the opponent have improved.
bane73 , 11/16/08 1:05 PM
you didn't expect it to be so easy! You should go out there and show Davydenko how it's done since you're the expert who never criticises anyone.
Yes, I'm trying to grow up and aspire to be like perfect you. That's what all tennis fans live for: your great example!
jean , 11/16/08 1:05 PM
why should i show davydenko how its done? besides i am talking about the particular match..and im talking about the 'game'..it was a final and a close score means awesome tennis-the tennis played was ofcourse fantastic but closer matches bring out the very best in players...now about perfection..i dont think im perfect at all...if you think so-cant help..
janhavi , 11/16/08 1:47 PM
bane73, don't hope for federer to be brought down a notch or 2 back down to earth. He'll never be humble. His big head is too far up his arse he can't see the light of day.
jean , 11/16/08 1:53 PM
Nole displayed a great all-around game. Most importantly he wanted to win and he was focused on every point. On the other hand Davydenko was far from his best could not give more challenge to Nole. Congratulations to Nole and his fans he finished the year the way he started it. I am sure he will improve his game even more for the AO, but is he going to defend his title, I guess we shall see???? We all enjoyed a very long season and the players deserve a long awaited break. Once again, congratulations to Nole! Today, Serbia is celebrating Nole and Zimonjic win a very big accomplishment for Serbian sport! (Srbija od Beograda do Sangaja!!!!!! Tamo Daleko, .......). Congratulations to Nadal for his outstanding career accomplishments this year. Congratulations to Federer for his overall career accomplishments and becoming a legend of this beautiful sport. Congratulations to Murray for making the competition more interesting and for improving his game. Congratulations to Davydenko for making his first Masters Cup final and for proving to be a valid competitor to the top 4. Congratulations to all tennis players for their competitive spirit and making it more fun and challenging for all of us, fans.
arailic , 11/16/08 5:39 PM
very well said indeed!
janhavi , 11/16/08 6:08 PM
janhavi just dont bother mr/miss/mrs jean's comments....hello jean i didnt find anything wrong wid that post...what she said?????"great match...davydenko could have put up more fight..but djoko was just too good."..and y u r so crazy in finding faults in tat post....janhavi u just dont bother posts by homos, jean and gordana.........therz some attitude problem wid these guys...don kno...even god cannot help them....most ego-centric guys ive seen sofar.....
ravikiran , 11/16/08 7:00 PM
arailic: I second that. It has been an exhausting year for all the players but particularly those in the top 10. It was sad for everybody that Nadal was not at Shangai - and in any other year Federer would probably not have risked playing either. They all deserve a well earned rest.
ed251137 , 11/16/08 7:26 PM
ravikiran i dont think we should be saying anything about gordana..she hasnt been commenting..atleast not today..besides this is another big moment for Novak and for Serbia..and i personally wouldnt want to even try to spoil it by any means..that according to me, would be disrespectful.
janhavi , 11/16/08 8:33 PM
Thx Jean
So you have noticed that too? People just have to read the interwievs after he loses a match to see what kind of a person he is. But the problem is that they just read the newspapers that writes about him as he was a God. They seldom write anything against Federer. Look at Nadal, he is a real winner. Cause he allways says good stuff about he´s opponents. Doesn´t matter if he lost or not.
bane73 , 11/16/08 8:56 PM
A lot of people see it bane73. It's only those who are blind who can't see it.
tenstar , 11/17/08 12:58 AM
Hurray, hurray, hurray, our Novak is just great, he's the WINNER, arailic, you've said all the important fact, regards to bane73, tenstar, jean, and the others who're supporting good tennis, who're not blind and always admit somebody's effort to achieve such a great success, all the nation is more than proud of Nole, my dearest, as well as Zimonjic/Nestor, for all of you, just an information, they won Masters Cup as well, they're number 1, so, such a small country, however, 4 of them leading in top of tennis sport, finally, nobody could affect my happiness these days, I'm flying, fill so proud, smiling all the time, cause my dearest boy has shown everyone what a champion he is, God blessed you...
gordana , 11/17/08 8:53 AM
yeah novak played awesome. i hope he can keep that form up to an extent. and his celebtration was pretty nice 2. gordana- do u know who novaks current gf is? is that jelena? cos he said it was miss universe 2006 but i didnt think jelena was miss universe and thought theyd broken up a long time ago??? since ur the novak fanatic thought u might no.
u pple are very patriotic, usa wud be proud.
kaitepai , 11/17/08 8:59 AM
kaitepai, in spite of fact some people from your country don't know how to behave themselves, I have to admit, you're quite objective regarding Novak, as far as his girlfriend concerned, Jelena Ristic is his loving girlfriend, don't listen the other stories, it's rumours, she's very nice young lady who's studding economy in Rome/Italy, I think Nole loves her very much, and for time being, he's happy with her, but who knows what will happen, he is still very young, but so far they're couple.
gordana , 11/17/08 9:33 AM
the part that touched me, and pardon me I have been guilty of criticising his coach for this animated cheers and warlike expressions on his face, was when they formed a circle and embraced and jumped and danced. the camaraderie and the importance of the win for them was tear-jerking.
sstay , 11/17/08 11:03 AM
well done novak!!! zimonjic wins his doubles with nestor, well congrats to serbia, they really must be celebrating. a shame davydenko couldnt play a bit better than what he did, but full credit to novak, he played well.
ivanovic33 , 11/17/08 1:47 PM
haha..yeah..anybody who says Federer isnt arrogant is blind..that should include people who've actually met him as well as his own peers..wow..thats a good number of people blind out there..
janhavi , 11/17/08 2:01 PM
gordana- uh MY COUNTRY? hahahaha i highly doubt uve ever met anyone from my country before!!! I am pretty sure we are a well behaved people?? Relatvely quiet.... haha that really made me laugh.
so the girl in the stands was jelena then???
kaitepai , 11/18/08 12:49 AM
kaitepai, you don't have to laughing and have any doubt regarding some people from your country, if you follow this site properly you'll find out who is that person, I even don't want to mention his/her name, have a look above and you'll find out, anyway, I've met many people from India, actually, I used to work with them in JW Marriott Hotel in Dubai UAE, for 5 years, so I do know what I'm talking about, like everywhere, there are good people and the others who're not so good, I've had great experience with some of them.
Finally, I've answered on your question, yes, Jelena is his girlfriend right now and she is so sweet, don't you think so?
gordana , 11/18/08 9:19 AM
oh so u didnt mean me then... cos im not from india haha
she seems ok... i like mirka beter:)
kaitepai , 11/18/08 9:25 AM
kaitepai, then where do you come from, your name telling me opposite, you do have a right to prefer mirka, that's the matter of taste but in this case you don't have an good taste at all, cause Jelena is very beautiful girl in comparison with Mirka who's such a fet, have impression she doesn't care about her image at all, however she's suppose to do that, as a girlfriend of leading tennis player of the world she has to take care about her outfit and weight, don't get me wrong, beauty is not important thing in the world, and Federer love her, it's his business not mine, but as a public face she has to respect audience all over the world, it's not so nice to see her getting fetter and fetter, on the other side, Jelena has a beauty, she is very intelligent girl, studying economy on prestige Rome University, don't just waiting for Novak to solve her problems, appearing on every tournament possible, she has taken her life in her hands, do have a hope, you've got my point...
gordana , 11/18/08 9:40 AM
nationalities mentioned again? this is just a request-can we leave countries out of this?..even if you have something positive to say..please..nationalities getting mentioned every now and then is off-putting(be it for whatever reasons)..& last time i checked the site was named tennistalk.com
janhavi , 11/18/08 2:11 PM
janhavi nothing personal, don't get it wrong, apologize if I somehow insulted you, regards...
gordana , 11/18/08 2:17 PM
no no nothing like that..but you know misunderstandings can crop out of anything..lol..thts why i said it..afterall we're all sensitive souls when it comes to our nationalities..no need to apologise.
janhavi , 11/18/08 2:45 PM
gordana- my name is kate. i am from new zealand. does that help?
mirka just makes me laugh every time i look at her, so thats prob why i love her!!
kaitepai , 11/18/08 7:43 PM
personally..i adore Mirka too!she's just cute!
janhavi , 11/18/08 8:14 PM
i def agree! and she has done wonders for roger's looks and fashion sense!!!
kaitepai , 11/18/08 9:49 PM
kaitepai, New Zealand sounds great, my uncle used to live over there, he told me such a nice stories about your country, regards...
gordana , 11/19/08 8:57 AM
My 5yr. old son, is a Novak fan! He watches Nole's matches and started playing tennis because of Novak! From Florida, we wish Nole all the best in the finals. He is playing at 3:00 in the morning our time. We will watch the match and video tape it. May the best one win. It will not be easy with Davydenko. We already saw that a couple of days ago! Davydenko is a strong opponent. I sincerely hope that Nole will have the energy and desire to fight for every single point. This is the finals and as many of you already said, he should finish the year the way he started, victorious. Of course I hope he will not give away a set, not to mention the whole match (I'm trying to forget the 6:0 2nd set against Davydenko)! He will need lots of energy and tons of patience to make it happen. We all have faith that he will win, because he won against him a couple of days ago. I am sure he is using that match to develop a strategy for tomorrow and step up his game, because Davydenko is hungry for a fast revenge and a win. As far a Novak's game is concerned, it has not been "his best". Unlike Davydenko, who's playing some great tennis and proved he deserves the finalist spot. Nole is on the right track to step up his game, but he still has a lot to do before the AO. Let's hope that he will be victorious and that whatever he does will be enough to WIN. Nole's fans all over the world are supporting him, from Belgrade, USA and all the way to China.
