David Nalbandian and Juan Martin Del Potro will continue their indoor rivalry on Thursday, as they play for the third time in three weeks.
David Nalbandian has already failed to defend his title in Madrid at the hands of Argentine countryman Juan Martin Del Potro. Del Potro will have another opportunity to spoil Nalbandian’s title defense in their third-round match. In 2007, Nalbandian shredded the competition in Paris. He plowed through the draw taking out Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic before completely demolishing Rafael Nadal in the final.
Nalbandian’s form has not been as fearsome in 2008 as it was last year. He won the title in Stockholm, but lost in Madrid and Basel. He holds a slight edge over Del Potro at two wins to one. Nalbandian defeated Del Potro last week in Basel (eventually losing to Federer in the final), but Del Potro defeated him the week before.
The surface in Paris is slower than it was in Madrid. Both men should be comfortable, though the slower surface will expose a slight weakness in Nalbadian’s game. His fitness has long been questionable and it tends to hamper his movement a bit. Del Potro also has a slight edge because Nalbandian is playing in his fourth tournament in four weeks, and fatigue may well be a factor. Del Potro for the win.
