Mario Ancic will try to end the year with a good result in Paris, but standing in his way is new tour star Juan Martin Del Potro.
Argentina’s Del Potro has finally begun to live up the expectations heaped on his shoulders as a junior. He got his first tournament win in Stuttgart in July, and then proceeded to win his next three as well. Del Potro is now on the cusp of making the Masters Cup in Shanghai; he is seventh in the race and in great position to qualify for one of the eight spots.
Mario Ancic has continued to struggle with his health in 2008. The Croat was forced to miss most of the summer hardcourt swing, including the US Open. He has played a few tournaments this fall, but has not yet been at 100%. Ancic had an encouraging win over Rainer Schuettler of Germany on Monday. He beat the resurgent German in three sets to advance to the second round.
Del Potro is by far the more consistent of the two. Ancic relies heavily on his big serve, but the surface in Paris has not been playing fast, which will allow Del Potro to get his racquet on some of the Croat’s first serves. Ancic will likely have difficulty keeping up with the Argentine’s groundstrokes. Del Potro should be able to wrap this one up in straight sets.
