  • Berdych aims to get that 2005 feeling back

    10/27/08 3:17 AM | David Cox
     - The top quarter is packed with past winners including Marat Safin and Nikolay Davydenko. 2005 champion Tomas Berdych enters the fray on Monday afternoon.

Tomas Berdych and Robby Ginepri played at this event two years ago, with Berdych winning 6-3, 6-3 on the way to the quarters. The Czech was a surprise winner of this event back in 2005, his first and only Masters Series title to date. The draw did open up quite nicely for him but he had several big wins, taking out Jiri Novak, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Radek Stepanek and then Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the final.

Last year's event didn't go quite so well for Berdych; he beat Mario Ancic but then David Ferrer sent him out in round three 6-4, 6-2.

Ginepri has slipped down outside the top 50 but his form has been on the rise indoors. He qualified for Madrid and then knocked out Michael Llodra and Davydenko before losing the tightest of matches to eventual finalist Gilles Simon 8-6 in the final-set tiebreak. Last week it took a fine pressure-serving display from Andy Roddick to oust him 7-6, 7-6 in Lyon.

Berdych has been up and down over the past month. He won in Tokyo but lost a one-sided match to David Nalbandian in Madrid and then got edged out by Simone Bolelli in Basel.

    Prediction: Berdych in 3
