Spaniard Tommy Robredo awaits Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Masters.
Last year, Tommy Robredo qualified to compete in The Masters Cup, an honor that only the top eight players in the world can claim. His ranking has slipped to 18th in the world and he is no longer in contention for the end of the year tournament in Shanghai. He is still a top twenty player, however, and he holds a title in 2008 (Bastad). Robredo had a good result at the US Open, where he reached the round of 16 before going down in five sets to Novak Djokovic.
Frenchman Jeremy Chardy came out of nowhere earlier this year to defeat both Dmitry Tursunov and David Nalbandian in the French Open en route to a round of 16 loss to Nicolas Almagro. Chardy’s ranking is currently 74th in the world, and he spent much of his season playing on the Challenger circuit.
Though Robredo is in possession of no huge weapons, he is an incredibly consistent player with great speed. Chardy is not likely to be able to stick with Robredo throughout the course of a set, particularly since the Frenchman’s best results occur on clay courts. Robredo should win easily.
