The bottom quarter has opened up quite nicely for No. 2 seed David Nalbandian and a semifinal clash with Juan Martin Del Potro looks odds on right now.
Stanislas Wawrinka going out in round one worked out very well for Nalbandian, who was seeded to meet the Swiss in the quarters, having lost to him in straights at this tournament last year.
Nalbandian has admitted in press conferences this week that his main focus is on the Davis Cup in three weeks, with his chances of making Shanghai slim at best. The Argentine would probably need to win the title this week and then defend his Paris crown and rely on a large slice of luck to get in.
In the more immediate future, Nalbandian faces Belgium's Kristof Vliegen on Thursda afternoon. The Belgian defeated Vienna champion Philipp Petzschner 6-2, 6-3 a day ago and has momentum behind him after coming through three rounds of qualifying. Vliegen was once ranked in the top 30, but a dire run at the start of the year where he struggled to win any ATP tour matches forced him back onto the Challenger circuit, where he has picked up four titles.
Vliegen won their only previous match, but as it was on clay and four years ago, so it's fairly meaningless.
Prediction: Nalbandian to re-produce the tennis which destroyed Albert Montanes and face little trouble in reaching last eight.
