Argentina’s top two players, David Nalbandian and Juan Martin Del Potro, take to the court on Tuesday at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors.
David Nalbandian vs. Albert Montanes
David Nalbandian is playing his third of four consecutive tournaments as he makes a final bid for the Masters Cup year-end tournament. The Argentine won the event in Stockholm, but suffered a third round loss in Madrid at the hands of countryman Juan Martin Del Potro. Nalbandian was the defending champion in Madrid, so he will be looking to make up the lost ranking points in Basel. He has beaten opponent Albert Montanes of Spain the only three times the men have played. The most recent victory came just two weeks ago in Stockholm. Montanes is largely a clay-courter; he will have difficulty finding an answer to the massive groundstrokes of Nalbandian. The Argentine in straight sets.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. George Bastl
Argentina’s other big gun, Juan Martin Del Potro, is making a push to qualify for the Masters Cup as well. He is on the bubble, ranked eighth in Race points of eight players who will go to Shanghai in November. Del Potro had a huge win over Davis Cup teammate Nalbandian last week in Madrid, but lost in the quarters to Federer. He has won four tournaments in 2008. tGeorge Bastl, the Swiss veteran who ended Pete Sampras’ win streak at Wimbledon, has seen his ranking fall to 267th in the world. He spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit and he needed a wildcard to gain entrance to Basel. The Argentine should win this match easily.
