No. 6 seed Igor Andreev looks to put his recent run of losses behind him as the indoor season enters its final few weeks, but he's been drawn against nemesis Jurgen Melzer.
The draw wasn't kind to the Russian in Madrid last week, pitting him against eventual finalist, France's Gilles Simon in round one. Andreev eventually lost a marathon 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(7) after a final set which saw multiple chances for both players, and then had to watch as Simon enjoyed a career-best week, taking out Rafael Nadal in the semis.
The week before, Andreev had a surprising loss to Jeremy Chardy in the second round of Moscow and following his two defeats to Argentina in the Davis Cup semis, it means he hasn't had a string of wins since the US Open.
Today he faces the tricky lefty Jurgen Melzer and an upset could well be in the cards as the Austrian is something of a nemesis for Andreev, leading him 4-0 head-to-head. Three of those wins came back in 2004, but Melzer showed he's still got what it takes to unsettle Andreev in Hertogenbosch on the grass this summer, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
The courts in Basel are quick and crucially the bounce keeps quite low which will favor Melzer a lot more with his liking for the dropshot and getting into the net. He missed Madrid but the week before he made the quarters in a very strong Vienna field, beating the out-of-form Ivan Ljubicic and then Juan Carlos Ferrero before coming a-cropper against Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
Prediction: Melzer in 2
