Spaniard Feliciano Lopez upset compatriot David Ferrer in round two for the opportunity to take on the “other” Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka.
Feliciano Lopez’s ranking has dipped to 40 in the world, but he advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the semifinal in Vienna last week. Otherwise his season has been mediocre. He bombed out of the US Open in the first round to Austria’s Jurgen Melzer and the first round in Metz to Michael Llodra of France. He has played well in his last few matches, and his form in his win over David Ferrer was impressive.
Stanislas Wawrinka has struggled a bit recently himself. He advanced to the round of 16 at the US Open, but he was beaten soundly by Andy Murray 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Wawrinka’s most recent result was a first-round exit to Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in Vienna last week.
Ranking would indicate that at number 12 in the world, Wawrinka has the clear advantage over Lopez, but the Spaniard has played better in Madrid of the two men. The surface suits Lopez’s game well, and Wawrinka will likely find it difficult to handle the pace of the Lopez serve. Combined with the vocal support of the Madrid crowd, this might just be another upset in the making at the hands of Feliciano Lopez.
