  • Simon and Andreev look for a nice result in Madrid

    10/13/08 8:19 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - The eighth Masters event of the year kicks off Monday with some intriguing matchups, this being one of them.

Simon has had the best year of his career and is near a career-high ranking. He made the third round at the US Open and the semis at Toronto, beating Federer in the process. He won the title on clay in Bucharest the week after the US Open but has struggled indoors, losing first round in both Metz and Vienna. Simon has never played in Madrid before.

Igor Andreev is coming into Madrid playing some fine tennis. Since Wimbledon he's made two clay finals and had solid showings all summer. It culminated in a five-set showdown with Federer at the US Open. He has struggled a bit since then and is looking for some nice results to finish off the season.

They've played only once before, on clay last year in Sopot. This match is completely different and a total toss up. Andreev will look to dictate with his forehand but Simon will favor this quicker surface. Simon won their clay encounter last year, a surface Andreev is known to be better at. If anything, Simon will be a slight favorite, but just barely.

It was good entertainment, although the quality was far from superb. Andreev had control of two of his match points and blew both of them. Simon came up huge at 7-7 in the tiebreaker.
