Steve Darcis of Belgium came through the qualifying draw to meet 25th-ranked Mardy Fish in the opening round.
Mardy Fish comes into Madrid on a good hardcourt run. He did well in the US Open tune-up events, reaching the semi-finals in Washington and the finals in New Haven. Most impressive, however, was his quarterfinal run at the US Open itself. Fish went out to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals, but before Nadal knocked him out, Fish took a set from the world number one.
Steve Darcis has one thing in 2008 that Fish does not: a title. The Belgian won the Memphis event over Robin Soderling in the final. His other good result came in Amersfoort, where he finished runner-up. Since that event, Darcis has progressed no further than the third round in any tournament, including two Challenger events that he entered.
Darcis will perhaps start with better rhythm. He has a couple of qualifying matches under his belt, whereas Fish has not played since the Open. Still, form would suggest that the American should be able to get through the match. Don’t be surprised if Darcis snags a set before going down, however. Darcis, just 5'6'', has nowhere near the power of his opponent, so the quick indoor surface could be the difference for Fish in the end. Fish in three.
