Kei Nishikori will battle not only Robin Soderling, but also a biased crowd that will be cheering loudly for their countryman.
Robin Soderling is playing better right now than his number 35 ranking would suggest. He has thrashed every opponent in his path on his way to the semifinals. So convincing were his matches that his serve has not yet been broken this week. The Swede has reached a couple of finals (Memphis and Rotterdam), but he has not won a tournament in 2008 as of yet.
Kei Nishikori has won a tournament this year, coming from out of nowhere to shock the tennis world with a win in Delray Beach. Stockholm will be his second semifinal in 2008. The Japanese man had a bit of a disappointing summer until the US Open where he reached the round of 16, dispatching David Ferrer along the way.
Nishikori has struggled more than Soderling has this week. The two matches that Nishikori has played have both been three set affairs, as he did not have to play his quarterfinal match. His opponent, Mario Ancic, was forced to withdraw before the match due to illness.
Soderling should impress his fans with an appearance in the finals. The Swede in three.
