David Nalbandian seeks his second title of the year as he heads into the final weekend at the If Stockholm Open.
David Nalbandian of Argentina is ranked 7th in the world; his opponent, Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, is 33rd. Of the two men, Nalbandian has looked the far more impressive in Stockholm. Nalbandian has breezed through his draw with ease. Nieminen has had a more difficult time of it, kicking off the tournament with consecutive three set matches. Nieminen’s first easy match came on Friday, when he beat Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-4.
Nieminen will most likely not be able to keep up with Nalbandian if the Argentine is at his best. When working properly, his backhand is one of the most lethal shots in the ATP tour. The big question for Nalbandian is not his talent, but more his consistency. The bad news for Nieminen is that Nalbandian generally plays his best tennis in the latter part of the year on indoor courts. Nothing the Argentine has done this week suggests that he will be anything but impressive in Saturday’s match.
Nieminen has had a good tournament in Stockholm, but chances are that his run will end with the Argentine. The two men have met on nine occasions and Nalbandian holds the slight lead at 5-4. The Argentine should prevail in straight sets.
