Robin Söderling, the last Swede left in the draw at the Stockholm Open, takes on Wimbledon semifinalist Rainer Schuettler in Friday’s quarterfinal.
Sweden’s remaining hope will have his work cut out for him against the resurgent German Rainer Schuettler. Schuettler was playing the Challenger circuit in May of this year, but suddenly found his form in early summer. He went on a shocking run to the semifinals of Wimbledon and since then has jumped from number 97 in the world to 34. Recently, he made the semifinals in Beijing and the quarters in Tokyo.
Söderling is ranked 35th in the world and has struggled slightly of late. He had two impressive appearances in consecutive finals earlier this year in Rotterdam and Memphis. Since then, his results have been mediocre, especially at Slams. His best result at a Slam in 2008 was a third-round defeat at the French Open.
Söderling and Schuettler have played each other four times, but they have not met since 2006. The fans will give Söderling an advantage, as they will be firmly in his corner. Whether that will tip the scales for the Swede remains to be seen. Schuettler has been playing solid tennis, but the quick indoor surface should benefit the serve and volley game of Söderling. This could well be a tight match, but in the end Söderling should have enough to get past the German.
