Juan Martin Del Potro takes on surprise finalist Tomas Berdych in what is sure to be a grand display of blistering ground strokes.
Del Potro of Argentina has decidedly had the year of his career in 2008. Four tournament wins and a quarterfinal showing at the US Open finally gave some validation to the tennis experts who touted Del Potro as a future star since before the Argentine turned professional. He has proven over the past few months that he is a bona fide contender in any tournament he enters.
The Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych has seen his ranking drop to 27 in the world from a career high of 9 last summer. With a few exceptions, his results have been mediocre, and sometimes even disappointing. Most recently, he was knocked out of the US Open in the first round by American Sam Querrey. He has come on of late though. He reached the semifinals in Bangkok in September, and had some impressive wins this week, most notably a three set upset over Andy Roddick in the semifinals.
More than likely Del Potro, the new world number nine, will emerge the victor. He is the more consistent of the two, and unlike Andy Roddick, he is not as apt to blow leads and go away mentally on break points. Berdych’s serve is a bigger weapon than Del Potro’s, but Del Potro is tougher on the return. Del Potro in three.
