Juan Martin Del Potro and Richard Gasquet clash in a rematch of their Stuttgart final earlier this year. Both men are in fantastic playing form.
Argentina’s Del Potro and France’s Gasquet are the number twelve and thirteen ranked players in the world. Their semifinal has all the makings of a epic bout. They have played twice in their careers and split the wins. Del Potro won their last meeting in Stuttgart.
The Argentine has had the more impressive year. He won four consecutive tournaments this summer and advanced to the quarterfinals at the US Open before going out to eventual finalist Andy Murray. Del Potro also won both of his semifinal Davis Cup matches against Russia. To say that he is on a hot streak is a monumental understatement.
Richard Gasquet has been unpredictable at best in 2008. His Grand Slam results have been particularly disappointing. He did not play the French Open at all, and was ousted out of Wimbledon in the round of 16 (where he was defending semifinal points. The biggest disappointment of all came at the US Open. Tommy Haas sent him packing in the first round.
Gasquet has played well in Tokyo, however. His backhand, one of the best on tour, has been lethal throughout the tournament. He has not lost a set yet, and looks to be in fierce form for Saturday’s semi. If Gasquet plays like he has up to this point, he can do some serious damage to Del Potro with his backhand. Del Potro is the more powerful of the two and he comes into the tournament with better momentum. Del Potro in three.
