American Andy Roddick, fresh off a tournament win in Beijing takes on Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.
Tomas Berdych has had a disappointing year. He has won no titles and events where he was expected to shine (particularly on fast surfaces) he produced nothing but mediocre results. The highlight of his year was the making the final of Bastaad. He lost a shocking match in the first round of the US Open to American Sam Querrey.
He recently had a good run in Bangkok, where he reached the semifinals. He was beaten soundly by Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-1.
Andy Roddick has not had a dream season either. He’s pocketed three tournament victories, but he struggled with injuries and paid the price with a second round exit at Wimbledon. The big-serving Serb, Janko Tipsarevic ousted Roddick in a tight four setter. The American recently made the quarterfinals of the US Open, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic.
Expect Roddick to win this match doing what he has done all tournament long - namely, serving big and capitalizing on a host of free points off aces. Tomas Berdych generally wins matches by out-hitting his opponent. That tactic is not likely to work with Roddick - the American’s serve is often un-returnable. If Berdych has a loose game (which he often does), Roddick will steal the match win. Roddick in straight sets.
