  • Troicki aims for second upset of Roddick

    10/3/08 3:08 AM | Ricky Dimon
     - Viktor Troicki stunned Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Classic earlier this summer. He looks to duplicate that effort on Friday in Tokyo.

It will be the third career head-to-head meeting between Andy Roddick and Viktor Troicki when the recent rivals do battle in the quarterfinals of the AIG Japan Open in Tokyo on Thursday. This will sway the score one way or the other, as they are tied up at one apiece in the series. Roddick prevailed 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in Miami, but Troicki bounced back to win a three-setter of his own in Washington, D.C. after dropping the first set 6-0 in 21 minutes.

Roddick, however, is in much better form now than he was during the U.S. Open Series. He reached the quarterfinals at the Open, where he almost extended Novak Djokovic to five sets. Last week Roddick took home the title in Beijing, and so far in Tokyo he has outlasted Ivo Minar in three tiebreaks and dispatched Jurgen Melzer in straight sets.

Troicki is still on the roll he enjoyed during his run to the Legg Mason Classic final, where he fell to on-fire Juan Martin Del Potro. He also reached the third round of the U.S. Open before giving Rafael Nadal all he could handle for a while, only to succumb in straight sets. Last week in Bangkok, Troicki got past Fabrice Santoro in straight sets, but then dropped a second-round decision to Melzer.

This should be another highly-entertaining clash and anything less than three sets would be a disappointment for the fans. Roddick fired 37 aces against Minar and he needs to serve well once again because Troicki's baseline game is considerably superior at the moment. The difference could be that Roddick will be playing with a chip on his shoulder, and the revenge factor could give him the motivational edge that he needs. Roddick in a three-set thriller is the pick.
