It's been 10 years since Carlos Moya topped the world rankings, but the 32-year-old is still going strong, inside the top 50 and looking to prove he's worthy of a Slam seeding next year.
Moya still produces flashes of the old brilliance especially on the clay where he made an ATP final in Bucharest a few weeks ago. He's also had a couple of stand-out results in the Hamburg and Cincinnati Masters Series events, making the quarters in both.
It wasn't a huge upset when he took out Ivo Karlovic on Wednesday, but it shows he's got some excellent momentum going ahead of the upcoming Masters tournament in Madrid.
Moya faces Dmitry Tursunov, who looked a little average in his first round against Thierry Ascione, but then went on to destroy Jose Acasuso 6-2, 6-2 with an explosive performance.
Tursunov's been as solid as ever on the cement this year, winning Sydney and making another final in Indianapolis. He had a few bad draws in the Masters Series events, Olympics, and US Open otherwise he may well have gone a lot deeper but instead lost to James Blake, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko. A couple of weeks ago in the Davis Cup he was completely inspired in the doubles rubber, throwing Russia a lifeline against Argentina and he'll be hoping that can drive him to a year-end top 25 finish.
Moya and Tursunov have only played once, way back in 2004 when Moya won in straight sets at Wimbledon.
Prediction: Moya in 2
