Spaniard David Ferrer will take on Juan Martin Del Potro in a quarterfinal battle that has the potential to be the match of the tournament so far.
David Ferrer might hail from Spain, but he is no slouch on hard courts. Most Spaniards are known for their play on the dirt, but Ferrer has had equally good results on hard courts. He advanced to the finals of the Masters Cup year-end tournament in 2007 where he lost to Roger Federer. He also advanced to the semifinals of the US Open last year.
His hard court form this year is not as notable. His best result came at the Australian Open, where he reached the quarterfinals. He has had tournament wins on clay and grass, but not hards in 2008.
Juan Martin Del Potro is having his break-out year. Four consecutive tournament wins this summer and a quarterfinal showing at the US Open cements his status as a contender whenever he enters a tournament. He is in much better form than Ferrer, especially on hard courts. The seedings indicate that Ferrer is the favorite, but if Del Potro wins on Friday it will hardly be an upset. Del Potro for the win.
