Top American player Andy Roddick plays his first match since his tournament win in Beijing last week over Dudi Sela.
Andy Roddick has won three tournaments in 2008; in San Jose, Dubai and Beijing. He had a good run at the US Open, where he advanced to the quarterfinals, losing in a controversial match to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Roddick had been glib in a press conference about Djokovic’s varied injuries and after winning the match, the Serb laid into the live audience, causing a round of raucous jeering.
Roddick’s opponent is the big-serving Czech Ivo Minar. The two men have met on two occasions, the most recent of which was this year in Miami. Roddick won that match in straight sets. Wednesday’s match is likely to be an ace-fest. Both Minar and Roddick rely heavily on their first serve to win free points. Roddick’s approach shots are suspect at times, but generally his groundstrokes are better than Minar’s.
Though the sets are likely to be close, with at least one tiebreak, Roddick should prevail in straight sets.
