The exodus of the seeds in the Quarterfinals round leaves Andy Roddick playing Bjorn Phau for a place in the Beijing finals.
Roddick and Phau have played once before, in San Jose in 2006. Andy destroyed Phau back then, 6-3, 6-2. This match should follow the same pattern.
This is Andy Roddick's best shot at a title since the spring. Roddick is known as an extremely mentally tough player, but the knowledge of this title drought and knowing he is a huge favorite to win this might get him a bit of the yips. Its not likely though, as Phau really has nothing to trouble Andy with.
Phau is solid off both wings and can really strike the ball when he needs to. He is one of the fastest players around and has excellent defense. Roddick will throw down some big serves and forehands while Phau will try to do the same. Roddick is just a tad bit better at doing that and if he can avoid getting into long baseline exchanges from 10 feet behind, he will take this and easily.
However, Roddick has a tendency to drift behind the baseline, especially against lower-ranked opposition. Phau can take balls early and move in very well. Phau does have a shot here as Roddick's game has been all over the place recently. But Andy should take it.
