9/3/08 3:07 AM | Cheryl Murray
Scotland’s Andy Murray and Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro play for the first time since their fiery encounter in Rome earlier this year.
The last time Murray and Del Potro met, Del Potro left the court in tears, Murray left in a fury. The setting was on the clay in Rome. With no apparent love lost between the two men, they each employed some gamesmanship tactics. Murray was angry that Del Potro hit a ball at him but did not apologize. Del Potro retailiated by making a snide remark about Murray’s mother Judy, who was in the stands cheering her son on. Del Potro eventually retired from the match with a back problem.
Whether there will be fireworks on the court remains to be seen, but the tennis has the potential to be extraordinary. Del Potro and Murray (along with Rafael Nadal) are enjoying the best hard court form of the summer. Del Potro won Indianapolis and Los Angeles, Murray made the quarters in Toronto and won Cincinnati. Murray had a comprehensive win over world number ten Stanislas Wawrkina in the round of 16, Del Potro was equally impressive over Kei Nishikori.
Murray has had the cleaner ball striking of the two in the tournament so far, thus has the edge going into Wednesday’s match. The young Scot has served well and returned superbly. Del Potro may take a set or two, but in the end, the new world number four should prevail.

tenstar: He's playing well though. Having to revise my forecast that he wouldn't get through the quarters. He might just do it.

ed: I'd like to see him thru the quarters too tho I must admit I didn't expect him to get this far. Didn't get what Delpo said about his mum but it all seemed a bit sticky.
Have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muM-UQc_Tnk
Despite his messy look, his GB's best hope. I didn't expect Roddy to get this far too and am glad he has.
FedalFan: I hope less than 5 but will be difficult. :-)

I had a look at this earlier - in the wee small hours after the tennis finished and it was too late to go to bed. I couldn't catch exactly what he said either but he was seriously wound up wasn't he.
I read somewhere he and brother Jamie had a big falling out at Bejing but dont know any details. There has been some bad feeling between them ever since Popeye withdrew from the Davis Cup in the spring with a rather flimsy excuse. Jamie as good as said Andy was putting his career first rather than stepping up to the plate to play for GB.
PS: Jamie is really rather cute. I wonder if he has told his brother what a mess he looked?

ed: ok I figured what delpo said. Go to the USO website, the recent/headlines box and click on "Murray - Del Potro: bad blood?" story: http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2008-09-02/20080902122040549 6347.html
Didn't know the bros had a fallout. The only spat I know off in beijing was between 14 yr old Tom Daley and his mid-20s 10m platform syncro diving partner. What was popeye's excuse for skipping DC?

He had just won the Qatar title in January but was knocked out in the AO 1st round (but then you would know that!). He had been due to play DC in February but pulled out at the last moment saying he was concerned about aggravating an (unspecified) injury.
Brother Jamie commented, "It's not that Andy doesn't enjoy the Davis Cup, it's just that he obviously felt that it was more important for him to concentrate on Marseille and play well there rather than come here". i.e. Andy was more interested in his career than representing GB who seriously needed him. They lost to Argentine.

Did you know that... Sweden won all grand Slam titles in 1988. Stefan Edberg became the Wimbledon champion and Mats Wilander was victorious in the other three.

I hope this encounter between the two men will be more peaceful. That last "mother" spat incident wasn't very pleasant. I caught a bit of it and it looked like the ump did a good job trying to calm popeye and the situation. It's always difficult on court as it is.
